In past I had a Sigma 150 2.8 Macro and I couldn't get that super big shots of insects with their eyes like having 1000 mirrors.
Someone told me that it was because I bought a 1:1 lens, and that I should buy a 5:1 lens that had more magnification.

But seen these examples here below, these are also decent no ?
How close can you get for macrowork with this lens or do you macro-photographers think mostly 5:1 for the real magnified stuff?

Close shots with 100 2.8 USM Macro:

Some of the shots are and some are not.

The fly one is IMO, and most likely the close in ones are too.

your links don't really work for me, cause i have 50 posts per page...

but ways to get more magnification with a 100mm lens, are adding a 1.4TC, adding extension tubes, and reversing a 50mm lens on the end...you can do one of these, or multiples to get even more magnification

for butterflies you should be fine with just the 1:1

Just so everyone has their terms straight "1:1 magnification" means that an object is rendered as lifesize on the sensor. Meaning that when you are focused on a subject at the lens's minimum focus distance (as close as the lens will focus) the subject's actual size will be rendered on the sensor area. Ratios larger than 1:1 magnification like 2:1 or 5:1 or whatever will be magnified on the sensor area, "larger than life size" if you will.

The MP-E lens is the only one I know of that can natively go to 5:1, although you can increase the magnification on a macro lens using an extension tube.

All of that said, life sized rendering on a sensor is pretty big. Things like the MP-E are very specialized, like attaching a microscope to your DSLR. You may want to go there someday, although I wouldn't recommend it for your general macro work. The 60mm EF-S or 100mm USM are usually quite sufficient.

Go visit the Macro photo sharing section, bet you'll learn a lot.
If you want to capture details of an insect eye, an 1:1 macro lens can do it, but you'll need larger subjects (like wasps rather than flies)
