Is the evaluative metering mode in the 5D3 linked to any selected AF point, or only the center AF point? Thanks

Nevermind, found the answer on page 171 of the manual. It's linked to all points in evaluative metering mode

Evaluative metering in Canon cameras has long been BIASED to the AF point used, but also does factor in the brightness of surrounding AF zones as well.

Upgrading from 30D to 5D3 I was surprised to see that the latter applies a stronger bias to the selected AF point area when One-shot AF is used compared to AI Servo.

Depending on the scene, the reading difference can be substantial.

Could you post your test shots?

To determine if your camera does this or not, place the selected single focusing point over an area that is substantially brighter or darker than the rest of the framed scene and check if the suggested exposure parameters change when you switch from One-shot AF to AI Servo and back.

If you take the pertaining shots, there will be difference in brightness between the two pictures. That's all you could see if I posted 5D3 samples, since the exposure difference depends on the contrast amount between subject and background/foreground within that particular scene. It's not a fixed exposure shift, like the one you get from dialling in exposure compensation.

It should also be noted that half pressing the shutter button (to achieve AF and exposure in one shot AF) locks the exposure at the AF point in Evaluative metering mode, whereas the other metering modes are locked at shot time and are taken from the centre of the frame no matter what AF point is used.
At least, thats how i read it.

Ive always thought this was the same for my old 350D, 30D, 40D and 60D although its not something i ever tested.

Only if shutter button has factory setting for shutter button (focus and metering) does holding shutter button half way hold the exposure.
If you put back botton focus (e.g. CFn-IV, Operation = 2), the metering is not held with a half press.

No, because it locks when you lock focus. And if you have that at AF-ON, you don't lock.

Note that iFCL metering (first seen in the 7D) not only considers the AF points you actually select, but every single AF point you don't use as well.
