Return it for what? The other one he has exactly the same?

How many times have you bought a new computer that does software updates when you turn it on. Heck my lightroom did an update two days after I downloaded it!

Just the way life is.

Probably buy a new one with the old firmware installed on it. Just download the update and enjoy the camera!

The question is whether or not the camera was actually refurbished. I have loaded the update. I hope that it actually was refurbished and not just polished.

I would hope the camera needed nothing repaired, focused and metered well, and was just simply re-boxed, rather than receive one that had a real failure. I'm not surprised they didn't update the FW during "refurb" since the new FW doesn't fix anything it just improves/enhances a few areas to extend the life of the model. I would bet many thousands of people are satisfied with the 1.2.5 FW and will never move to 2.0.0 or higher.

Sounds like you are a candidate for a new camera if you don't trust that the one you received was actually refurbished to your liking. I thought about buying a refurbished 7D from Canon but didn't get in on the 20% off deal and Amazon and Buydig are selling it for $1349 so only made since to get it new from them, since the Canon refurb wasn't any cheaper. When there are significant $$$ to be saved, refurb or used can be a good route to take. BUT you have to be the type of person that are comfortable with going that route. I just bought a new lens and a couple of used lenses. Bought the used ones because there was a significant savings to make up for the no warranty; bought the new one, because the used prices were too close to the new price. I think you see what I'm getting at. I have to say that just because the firmware isn't the latest, probably doesn't mean a lot. If you are comfortable with the price you paid for the camera, then update and start enjoying it. If you aren't comfortable, and think you may question your decision later, then the 14 day clock is ticking.

Mine came refurbished with firmware 1.2.x (I forget the patch version), and it had 7K clicks on it when I received it. It may be a store return but if so, then whoever returned it got some good use out of it first.

Regardless, it has been performing absolutely flawlessly so far, so I've no complaints whatsoever. After all, isn't that what you really want out of your cameras?

What do you think 'refurbished' actually means?

Canon, and most other electronic retailers are going to define it as - 'Restore to a saleable condition'. With a lot of refurbished products that means opening the box, counting the bits, checking it works OK then putting it back in the box.

In Canon's case, they go the extra mile and put it in a new "refurbished only" box. :)

Agree here, would you feel better about buying a "refurbished" camera that actually had nothing wrong with it or a camera that required a repair? There's just no way to tell.

I would not worry about it. Just do the update and move on.

I bought a sparkling new 7D a few weeks ago, since my first one is pretty worn.
The new one had 1.2.5.

I just recently got my refurbed 7D,and it had the old firmware. I updated to 2.0.3 and my 7D is working wonderfully. I think you will be fine - enjoy your wonderful 7D!
