I was checking out our newest big box electronics retailer to see what sort of gear they might have on the shelf. As I approached the camera kiosk I overheard the clerk speaking with a young couple. He was trying to upsell to a higher level DSLR by saying "both have similar features, but with this one you get increased pixelation." I assume he meant it had more megapixels. My wife quickly dragged me away as I was preparing to order them to flee the store while I beat him about the head and shoulders with a rolled up newspaper.

Wow the salesman does got a nerve to fool people with the "megapixel" mania. Unfortunately there are lot of people out there that don't know what's the actual need for it.

why would someone buy a camera at a box store? (sorry, bad pun).

I've seen similar and could not keep my mouth shut. "Excuse me, WHAT!!!??" Did not end well for the clerk. Though I haven't heard pixelation yet, that's pretty good.

Bad as these places are, there are some decent deals on everyday electronics on the low end where it is not worth the $ to ship it in.

I've heard some pretty ridiculous conversations in big box stores as well. I've thought about it though. If I was a sales person working in one of these stores and a soccer mom asked me which camera to buy and why, what would I say?!

We've seen the question asked here on this forum so many times. It's such a long and complicated topic, how could you possibly help someone in the store who needs to start from scratch?!

Honestly its not that tough. They only had 4 models to choose from. I dont even object to the whole more megapixels is better argument too much. BUt the idiot clerk was calling it pixilation, which indicated at that point he was making crap up. I've actually intervened when a clerk at best buy was blowing smoke and confusing people. I didnt interrupt, but I told the customer to look ask a couple of questions and a few things to look for, while the guy was giving them some space.

In regards to big box stores Best Buy, I would never trust advice from a man who sells fridges and cameras at the same time. When I have looked at cars or cameras or pc stuff on location and I ask about stuff I am interested in I usually wind up googling it later. Now I google it beforehand and save myself the hassle.

I agree. It is really not hard to simplify things like
- It takes faster pictures
-it has more megapixels
- it works in darker lighting

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH EEEEEEEVIL!!!

I live near Indy, the HH Gregg HQ. I hate them. They flooded the first floor of my new house with an improperly installed fridge. Sure, their insurance paid for it, but dang, we nearly didn't have a place to live, caused about a 2 week delay in everything. Their sales people are about as useless as BB but are on commission so they attack you the instant you enter the store. It drives me totally crazy.

I bought my 60D at BB (yes hate me all you want) because I knew that if there was a problem I could just swap the thing out with minimal hassle, had a 45 day return policy, and if you can believe it the best price on the 60D I could find anywhere at the time.

Actually, they don't. The camera guys have their zone, computer, media (incl game consoles), TV/Home Theater, Car audio/GPS, Geek Squad, all have their areas and pretty much stick to them and their products. Doesn't mean that everyone in those areas bothers to learn what they should about the products though.
