This has been posted at my site for about 8 days now but the EF rear baffle/cover arrived today and I popped it right in (4th image). P-e-r-f-e-c-t fit and looks like a true EF lens now. The rear baffle, as explained in my 3rd image, is from the 24-85 USM, which is a perfect match. Thought some might be interested in this procedure.

That's pretty neat. Quick question though, do u think the lens (electronics) will work on the non-EFS and/or film camera body? It would be nice it can.

So what you are saying is that the EF-S 17-85 IS can be completely converted into an EF 17-85 IS for use on the D30/60/10D?

Does it work on the older models, electronic wise?

Not sure this would work on the 10-22mm it comes awefully close to the rear of the baffle IMO.

This looks neat though.

*Yes, it works on the 10D, etc.
*As for older models, that I cannot confirm.
*I am not aware of anyone trying it on the 10-22 as the physical tolerances are VERY tight.
*Yes, it's quite neat all right!

Greg, do you mean photos taken to ensure it works? Or photos taken just in general? It works just as before but haven't really had a chance to take it out for any serious shots yet. I've been busy playing with the new 70300IS which is a cracker of a lens :D

Uhh, have you taken any photos ever in general?

Ooh, I believe that the lens works, I'd just like to see the quality of them compared to how it is when regularly mounted.

I don't have any before/after (identical) captures to compare, but I don't notice any difference really. Nothing optically has been changed.

BTW, are you getting the 120-300EX? [a bit off topic]

That's cool if you don't really see any big differences. That might make the EF-S deal disappear, because I still love my 10D even though I probably will end up with a 20D next(as much as I like what the 1D offers-can't afford MKII-which would be the camera that meets all my demands)

Yeah, the Non DG version(even though that doesn't matter at all). I am pretty sure I should have one by the end of January.

Still a big buy for me, my biggest(even though its only a tad more expensive than the 70-200 IS), but might buy used. Being a college student is difficult when it comes to building up stuff. I'm hoping I make the right decision(with regards to photography).

Maybe it's obvious ... but why even bother? Don't you have a crop body?

Because the EF-S mount won't physically fit a 10D, D60 or D30
But the modified one will...

If in doubt, I shut up...

Gear: 40D, 12-24mm AT-X Pro, 17-85mm, Sigma 150mm Macro Sigma 100-300 F4, 550EX, other stuff that probably helps me on my way.

Doesn't that really kill the warranty, or does that not matter?

I wondered about this conversion. If it works, I might just.. . . I have a 10D and a 20D in the mail with 18-55 lens. That is something very interesting.

So if it can be used on an Elan 7, does it work as a 17-85 or a 28-135. The mount change only allowing it to be mounted on EF bodies ?

It will fit the Elan7 but the image will be 17-85mm and the image will have a huge black ring around the outer 20% of the photo, so basically it won't work.

I did this with my Sigma before selling my Elan 7N.
