The mirror of the 10D/D60/D30 is smaller due to the smaller format. I'd check physical clearance - it may fit, and it may not. Not that it matters as serious vignetting is a given.

Besides, the Sigma merely has a smaller diameter image circle - the 17-85, even with the alteration, still has a deeper reach into the mirror box cavity.

I wouldn't bother putting it on full-frame either, but if it physically fits, somebody will try it - which is why Canon won't do it.

17-85mm modified doesn't reach deeper then my Sigma. Look at the rear element in fig. 4 the lens doesn't extend past the rear mount or the lens elec. contacts, and neither does the Sigma (infact the sigma rear glass bulges out just a hair more from what I can tell (it cleared my Elan), once you've made a lens EF mount it's EF mount, remember the 17-85mm now sets as deep as the 24-85mm, should clear any and all mirrors.

Nope I dont think canon shoud offer a modified version of the EF-S lenses. Too many stupid people out there. On the other hand, they should offer a conversion kit for the older bodies to EF-S. Now that would be a solution. (I am making a lot of assumptions like same mirror size and all)

FStopJojo,

So, now after a week with you EF 17-85, any comments on how it's holding up, any differences you've noticed, etc. This is a great 'lil trick.

It's holding up great. I even like snapping it onto my body more these days without that EFS baffle. The lens performs just as before the conversion, and was what i used to snap these of my new UWA that came today... :D
