This is NOT meant to be any sort of test (as you might know I've done a 7D -vs- 5Dii test and a 5Dii -vs- 5Diii test side by side landscaping). I was just putting my 2013 calendar together the other night and realized two of the potential shots were pretty similar to shots from last years calendar. The two from this year are both 5Diii w/16-35II shots. The previous years, one is with the 7D & 10-22, the other the 5Dii & 17-40. Click the images to go to flickr for full exif, but it should be intact on these here as well if you know how to view them.

Personally, I'm not sure how much of my upgrade has been the camera or the lens, but having the 5D3 and 16-35II I've seen more details in my images and better dynamic range/contrast issues. It could even be LR3 -vs- LR4 for all I know. Not sure which gets the credit, nor do I really care, but this combo has been a treat. I will say I probably need to find some new/more locations though. These are clearly two of my favorites and when I shoot at them I get very similar comps (these aren't the only two from either place). Oh, and the sunrises in 2012 were better too IMHO. ;) Enjoy.

I looked through all the pictures 2-3 times, and then made my guess as to what was used. To my surprise, I got them all right! That 5DIII and the 16-35 is an awesome combo. That lens almost never comes off my 5DII.

...I guess I spend WAY too much time looking at pictures posted on POTN. :)

I think you could restrict Ben to a point'n'shoot and he'd still come back with spectacular landscape shots like these.

Ben, these are all fantastic! What matters, ultimately, is whether or not you feel you're getting what you want out of your camera. It sounds like the 5D3 + 16-35 is impressing you (what you're doing with it here is certainly impressing me!). And if that's the case, stick with it!

I'd been considering a 5D3 for some time. I can afford it if I want it (I'm quite fortunate that way). But I'm so pleased with what I can do with my 7D that I've stopped worrying about upgrading at all. I'm sticking with what I've got precisely because it works so well for my purposes, enough so that I picked up a second 7D for my backup.

I know you've been considering the 6D, but the 5D3 seems to work so well for you that the best advice a humble amateur like myself can offer to you is to stick with the equipment that puts a smile on your face. It doesn't have to be the best -- it has to be good enough -- and it sounds like the 5D3 is.

I agree,

Ben could probably use a pinhole camera and produce a stunning landscape. :D

yeah, the only second thought here with the 6D -vs- 5Diii is more than I could get some cash out of that deal for some other things... The 5D3 is basically my dream camera. The only spec that's not perfect is the FPS but it's still better than the 5D2 (and 6D) and "good enough". I've been thrilled with it honestly.

Cash is transient, though. You could get some cash out of it, yes, but then you would lose your dream camera in the process. Some things are just worth it, and it sounds like the 5D3 for you is one of those things. I'd keep it and wait a little bit longer for whatever it is that you'd buy with the cash difference.

Note, too, that trading bodies comes with its own expense. Chances are, you won't be able to get back everything you spent on your 5D3. That's just the nature of technology: it gets cheaper over time.

In my opinion, life's too short to mess around with something that isn't what you really want, and too short to give up what you really want once you have it. You now have in your hands a camera that rocks your world. That's worth keeping.
