A few friends and myself have been kicking around the idea of doing a short stop motion clip and series of photos using motion frozen liquids in composite images. Still very early in the planning and trail tests before attempting something like this, but I thought I would throw the idea out to fish for suggestions and see if anyone else wants to give it a shot as well.

I'm sure most people have seen it, using thrown liquids and freezing their motion with high speed flash to do things like making it appear that a model is wearing clothes made of liquid. Has a very cool motion to the images. I want to call it fluid, but that is a very bad pun.

Main concept goal will be to produce two "Angelic/Demonic Warriors" Growing wings and attacking. I figure if I can reliably get each piece of the wing formations (And possibly their weapon out of water as well) in one or two shots, then in a solid night of work I should be able to get enough material to produce maybe 5 seconds. So, short battle.

Right now I am still working on early setup and concept that will lead to the final project, possibly sometime next spring. Good chance I will be stuck having to do this outside some night due to lack of access to a studio like space where I can safely toss piles of water around. Winter is kind of coming along rather quickly in my part of the world, and I think having the subjects bundled up in parkas and such will kind of ruin the effect I'm really going for.

Current plan for the first effect trial will be using plain pure water, and colour gels on speed lights to throw extra effects. Likely going to go with "Blazing White" for the angelic, and an orangey-red fire like effect for the demon. I originally thought black and white, but so far I have not come up with a reliable scheme to get a good black effect easily without using thickened tinted water.

Thoughts, suggestions, or comments? If I have time this weekend I may get a few test shots done, and then begin a proper blog to document my experiments.

It is all about the fun, learning, and spending time with some friends really.

One of our members does this to massive effect. He actually had/has a workshop in Hollywood coming up.

he also had with posted up in the glamour section. I'd post his name, but my phone isn't easy to do that with.

From what I've seen you are overly optimistic in creating the wings in just a few shots. I remember seeing one where the dress was composed of something like 30 separate splashes. Your project may seem simpler for each image, but to control the edge of the splash with any reasonable accuracy is likely to take many small splashes.

I was planning heavy composite image work for the wings, with the hope of being able to rig things up in tests so that we can reliably get each usable segment in a shot or two according to an animation plan. Each frame of the Wings themselves will be a fair number of shots in total, but tests will be done ahead of time to sort this out more.

Also planning to build a launcher system to throw the water more consistently than trying to hand throw everything, which (if it works) should greatly improve our accuracy and reduce the required shots.

I should also mention that I'm expecting this project to have a very high chance of failure, but if it works then it will be that much more interesting. Even if we don't get it worked out so that we can do the animation, we should still be able to do a few solid still shots.

I don't remember the forum user name off the top of my head, but the blog is here (external link) (NSFW). It's pretty amazing work showcased there. You can learn a bit about what the water splash shots take, too.
