Photocopy - The second image is pretty good, but it looks in the first as if the AF was hunting for focus. Seems that the light wasn't too good, and the camera was at long zoom...? The image doesn't include its Exif data - leaves one guessing. Was it processed in Photoshop with exif-stripping turned on?

A quick look at the SX50 Manual appears to indicate that Focus-Bracketing isn't in this camera - although it might now be called something else, that I'm missing.

But if that was at long or maximum zoom, it might be indicating that like my Fuji HS10, the camera focus-hunts in other than bright conditions.

If you can use a rest or tripod, at long zoom you might try using Manual Focus and do the shots at both JPEG and RAW. If you get the focus right with RAW, you can then use Levels and Curves in processing to improve colour and saturation, and last thing done, some gentle USM to fine-tune the focus.

Regards, Dave.

Focus-Bracketing isn't in this camera

I looked and i do believe there is a bracketing.. feature..i thought it was for during HDR at three differnt exposures?

they look ok on my monitor so i really need to read about this n that on the camera...

waiting for manual in the mail...

Shooter00 - Thanks. I'd just downloaded the Manual, and it's not too clear in the Menu.

Photocopy
- Some image editing programs have a 'feature' that removes the Exif data from JPEGs. In the case of Photoshop, that can be turned off. For images shown on photography forums, leaving the Exif in shows the settings used, which can be helpful to others trying to get similar results - or for advice re the image if that's what's being requested.

Regards, Dave.

Just picked up a new SX50 from Target, and went to the San Diego Safari Park today to try it out. Shot all jpeg, first two are right out of the camera, third with some minor adjustments in DPP.

At full 1200mm, taken from a distance of probably 250-300 feet at least. This was a jpg image, massaged to the best of my abilities in Lightroom. Settings are not great, as I was just playing around with the camera, so I am sure it can do far better. Overall, pretty pleased with it. I will take better shots and see what it takes to get the RAW images into Lightroom (4.1 does not recognize the RAW images from this camera at this time).

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Thank you! And this was with terrible settings. I set it at f8 on Av and let her rip. I think the photo came out at 1600 ISO. I bet it would have been far better if I had forced it to 400 ISO and went from 1/320 to 1/80 sec. The camera was on a tripod and the herons are patient birds. Next time!
