One thing I was going crazy over was that sometimes the digital zoom did not work and sometimes it did. I found if I did a "reset" it came back on… We'll as it turns out, the "digital zoom" does not work while shooting raw&Jpeg..

I looked through the manual and did not see anything about this…

Anyway, I decided to utilize the extra button to bring up the RAW/Jpeg setting screen for quick changing..

So now after a week of owning this camera, and really putting it to the test in all kinds of scenarios, I think I can confidently say this is the absolute best P&S I've ever owned. I've had literally dozens of different cameras over the past few years and sold, traded, broken and wore out many..

I can't imagine what the next iteration of this line will be, but I'm sure it will be amazing..

Sorry for all the images posted here, but I tend to really try to learn any new camera by using the crap out of.. I think I'v learned enough to put it down for a little while… :)

-AP-: Could you elaborate on your digital zoom explanation? I have this issue at times with my SX40, have not figured it out yet and am getting ready to head to Alaska. Would love to have the issue resolved. Thanks.

...

When I was playing with mine, I think I figured out that the digital zoom only worked in green box mode. I didn't make the connection between raw/jpg and digital zoom, but that might have been the real issue. Either way, I decided to completely turn off digital zoom because it was hurting my sharpness enough that I decided I didn't like its output.

Yes, put it in RAW/Jpeg mode and Digital zoom does not work.
Put it in Jpeg only, and it works…….

This post made me Google it for more info and I found this thread on Canon..

Digital zoom is no different than enlarging on screen later so I really can't see how it could be used in RAW. The sensor stores one value per pixel (photosite) & that's it. You shouldn't be able to manipulate that value by trying to enlarge it in camera or the entire idea of RAW has been defeated. ..

I've searched the manual and don't see it mentioned anywhere.. I would love to see it detailed further..

Hope that helps.

I agree with the pixelation in DZ, but gosh dang, it's a lot of fun for the super zoom videos.. Even with the artifacts, it's easy to make out some details.. This video from the zoo was at max distance with over 100 degree temps. between the the heat, atmosphere and digital, it looks like living hell..lol..

Basically RAW is an exact capture of the signals coming off the sensor, every real pixel. "Digital Zoom" post-processes your image in-camera to take a crop of the center of your actual sensor coverage and split the pixels in the "Zoomed" area to fake the "full" resolution of the camera. So trying to use Digital Zoom in any form of RAW capture doesn't work. Since the SX40 doesn't shoot RAW, Digital Zoom not working there may be due to some other feature that doesn't get along with DZ. There's a table in the back of the SX40 CUG (pp. 200-201) that lists some of the modes where DZ doesn't work. It's not comprehensive, but by studying it, you can figure out what specific features don't get along with DZ, as well as get a better understanding of how the various modes are set up (so you understand more fully how to use them and can transfer that knowledge to cameras that may not have those modes).

[QUOTE]

I read on UHH that the aspect ratio needs to be set at 4:3 for DZ to work on the sx40..

Perhaps test that out taw cat..

I just got my SX50 and love it! I am a newbie at photography and this is my first post. Just learning about the camera and I can't believe how it takes pictures! Here are some of my first shots.

Here are two more that I took with maximum zoom. The deer was really far away across a small lake.
