So I'm out shooting some macro when I see this wasp, a paper wasp I believe (red & brown). I'm shooting with my 100mm macro with a 2x extender, fully zoomed, so I'm inches away. I wait for him to come around the back side of a flower so I can see his face...just when I see his face and snap the picture, he gets slammed from behind from this abso-freakin'-lutely HUGE wasp!!! This was bigger than a Bic lighter, I'd say close to 4-5" long. It killed the wasp in seconds, then flew away. The paper wasp wasn't small, either...I'd say average to large sized. It was like watching something from a horror movie through my lens, no warning or anything! My heart was actually pounding afterwards!
Anyhow, here is the shot. Everything is out of focus, but I was focused on the front wasp's face before/as he got slammed. I'm not sure, but it even looks like blood on the front wasp's face. Crazy experience! Look at the freakin' size comparison, and the attacker was behind, and he's still HUGE!!!
