Have you held a 60D? It has a totally different kind of material than the rebels for the body.

If it's only low light performance you desire, there's no point considering the 50D, it's not that much better. The 60D should be better, but again, the difference is probably not that considerable, I don't know the exact difference, maybe a stop and a half better ISO. You need to go full frame for significant differences. Have you got fast lenses? A fast prime is the other option...

Forget about the 5d mk I. It's a dinosaur compared to the 60D in regards to ISO performance.

I've had both the 50D and 60D (my current camera) and I have no worries about build quality. Do I think the 50D would fair better it a fall? Yeah possibly but I don't think the 60D would fall apart either.

I have a 60d and have taken about 7k pics on it.
it does very well at 1600 ISO. pretty good at 3200.

build quality is very very good with it.
the lack of the joystick kinda sucks (especially since youre used to the joystick).

One thing to consider the 50d for is the ability to microfocus adjust. It can help set your lenses up to be just right.

the mag body is not a big deal, the extra 1 frame/sec isnt either. they both have similar weather sealing (not very good).

SD cards are not super expensive for 16gb or 32gb.

is the 7d not something you want to look into? it has MFA, the mag body you like, and the joystick. It does about as well as the 60d in low light too.

I had the 60D before going to a 7D and I sorely miss that wonderful screen. You will not regret getting it, wireless flash sync is a real killer feature that the other cameras in your list don't have.

I can't really comment if the 60D is better than the 5D mk I in low light since it's been a couple years since I had it but the 60D is no slouch.

Oh yeah, the swivel screen on the 60D is pretty awesome. Not too mention I am using the Magic Lantern firmware which gives me an intervalometer and more than 3 shots of bracketing for HDR (among other features).

Hello again!
Currently I have a 40d and an assortment of lens. I'm unhappy with my 40d for one simple reason, It's absolutely awful in low light, it's horrid above iso 800. I've decided that It's time to upgrade, and I have access to a 50d, and a 60d for great deals.

I'd like to see a few images with EXIF intact at 800 ISO and 1600 ISO out of your 40D. I still have my old 20D which produces very good images at 1600 ISO, even my old 350D produced good images at 1600 ISO.

50D at 1600 ISO, exceptional.

Shot out of my 20D

Model = Canon EOS 20D
Exposure Time = 1/160"
F Number = F2
ISO Speed Ratings = 1600
Focal Length = 135mm

Like I mentioned above, I have the 50d, 60d, and 5dm1 available to me for huge discounts. If I were to spend full price, I'd probably just suck it up and grab a 5dm2. I'd keep my 40d so I'm not worried about fps really, if I need a fast camera I'll have my 40d. I also never use my joystick, So no biggie.

My prices:
60d- 270
50- 70
5dm1-100

If you can get all those for that price - get all 3, and resale your way to a 5D2
If you really want or need low light, you need to seriously look at FF, and probably start with a 5D2

I agree with the jump to FF. Even my 5dc is pretty good at higer ISO's, the noise takes on a different quality which is far more pleasing to the eye than noise from a crop sensor. For the lowish cost of moving to a 5dc I would say try one for a bit and if it doesn't work out you can always move it on for very little (if any) loss.

One way to evaluate a camera is to look at the images it generates. These pictures came from a Canon 60D.

The only challenge in creating these images was in making sure the camera was pointed in the correct direction. In actual use, the 60D has proven to be a very good performer. Again, note that this opinion comes from really using a 60D.
