Another happy 60D owner here. One morning heading out to work I saw an incredible looking buck cross the road in front of me. I pulled into a driveway, grabbed the 60D and snapped into the woods, where it was quite dark. The result is the pic you see here:

Still a magnesium body(yay).

And you can tell the difference how? Does the 50D have a lovely magnesiumy feel as against the plasticky feel of the 60D?

Have you considered faster lenses for low-light?
Have you been experimenting with ettr?
I have used the 40D to full satisfaction in theatre at ISO 800 and sometimes at 1600.
Used fast lenses like 135/2.0 or 30/1.4 and took care not to underexpose.

Switching to another crop body will give some, but no spectacular improvement/

I don't think so, it's sharp as a tack and I don't have any focus issues. Fairly sure it's the camera not performing to what I want. I'm sure it's all to spec, but I just want better.

Then it's time to look at something new/secondhand, but take your time and if poss try renting what camera your thinking of getting' and this will give you some idea on how it's works and settings.

No I haven't. I ordered that and a 50d tonight to my store and I'll try them in a week when they show up. I guess a concern is that it feels cheap?

The 60D doesn't feel cheap, so far mine has held up great in the 20 mo or so I have owned it. There are plenty of pics of mag cases that have taken a fall and cracked, or when they scratch they show brilliant silver metal through the paint. Not a worry with the 60D, it won't dent or show scrapes, if you've dropped it hard enough to crack the stuff it is made of odds are that there will be other damage anyway.

I really like the camera.

There was a test of magnesium vs. the 60D case. The 60D was pretty impressive! Ever seen cracked magnesium bodies? Those things crack up pretty good! I had a Rebel T1i, and I'll be honest with you - it felt cheap in some respects. The 60D does NOT feel cheap, it feels like a pro camera, or should I say "pro-sumer" as they call it. OK, it doesn't have the joystick, but I get along OK without it.

If you haven't seen cracked magnesium bodies, take a look at this:
