My experience says you will get better results doing slides with a good scanner than with any macro lens.

I agree, and I do have a scanner for the slides that needed to be digitized at high quality. But, as DreDaze mentioned, my fixture was indeed about "time." I just wanted "record shots" of most of the slides, and the fixture was 5 - 10 times faster than my scanner. The results from the macro lens were more than good enough for my purposes. For other folks, that won't be the case. A scanner will be the best solution for them.

Can't you lay something like 20 slides on the scanner and do one image of them all? Isn't that the fast and easy way for making records?

Unfortunately my scanner is a dedicated slide/negative scanner that just does one at a time at 1 - 2 minutes per image. I don't have a scanner that would allow me to try the method you suggested. I would love to hear if other people have been successful doing that. It seems like it would be a good solution if it works. If someone tries it, I would like to know the Width-by-Height pixels that's available by mass scanning. If it's 1500x1000 or greater, that would be enough for my purposes.
