I suggest a 1.4x if you want to preserve as much IQ as you can, tho' you will lose some, or 2.0x if you want to lose more IQ but get rather longer. Having tried both on this lens I would stick to a 1.4x. You lose AF of course with either, so you need a good eye for MF ;-)a

I have a 2x II. For your lens, I wouldn't go 2x. Either 1.4x or save your money towards a new lens.

Now which 1.4 to go with...i too am looking at buying a 1.4 for my 100-400. Seems a good majority on many forums say to go with the Tamron 1.4, but do i go with the regular 1.4 or the pro 1.4? Seems to be appx. $100 diffence, but is there a $100 in quality?

Allegedly the cheaper of the Tamron TC`s retains AF. I have read this on lots of US Forums and so I have been looking for one myself. They do not seem readily available in the U.K. The other option is apparently the Kenko 1.4 pro.

Nice shot. However, I also do have the 2x TC, and I don't expect to get the result like yours from my 70-200 let alone a 100-400.
