Does anyone know what the policy is regarding calibration of lens that are still under warranty? I'm thinking of sending my 70-200 in because I'm having some inconsistent AF issues. I'm pretty sure they are going to cover that minus shipping to the Canon facility. However, I also have a new 50 1.4 on the way and was thinking of just sending that in as well as the body itself since each item would still be under warranty.

Are they going to balk at this and try to charge me for calibration of these 2 lens and the camera body? If not, I'm tempted to send my 24-105 just for the heck of it since that is also under warranty. Thoughts?

1st, Sign up for CPS, 3 day turnaround, and free shipping back. 2nd, you get "Clean and Check Coupons" @ gold or above.

Also, check the lens on another body, same settings, etc. to ensure it's the lens, and not the body.

But if you are having actual issues, it should be covered under warranty, ask for them to send you a UPS label, it's gonna cost like $30 to ship (not including the box.)

I've seen the CPS option, but I'm not sure if its worth it until I get an idea of how much, if anything, it is going to cost without it. All of my gear, besides the flash, is still under Canon warranty. I'm willing to pay for shipping, but I'm curious to know what happens if I send in a warranty lens in which they deem is within spec...am I going to get charged for that?

Just keep in mind, without cps, they take ages to turn things around, I had a body that wasnt checked in for 5 days, didnt get it back for 3 weeks.

Maybe you forgot to say "please" or "thank you" in your note to them? ;)

I have sent three different lenses and two bodies in for repair and have never had to wait for more than 7 business days. The only exception was the one time I sent a lens to VA when they had a fire in their factory. Even then it took only two full weeks. CPS may be nice but it isn't necessary to get a quick turn around.

^^^ Same here, I just sent my 70-200 for the same reasons as the OP and it was a 7 day turnaround. Mine was under warranty as well and I was not sure if there was a problem with the AF or if it was user error. Canon was great to deal with, they checked the lens and found everything to be within factory specs, and they paid for shipping back to me... I guess it must have been user error :o

Cheers,
Laurent

I sent my 35L in last week via CPS and it was calibrated to factory specs for free. So as long as it's in warranty, you should be fine. And if you're part of CPS gold, it's overnighted back to you.

Why send in equipment that does not have any issues? It makes no sense. One of the things requested is to fill in a detailed description of the problem along with supporting evidence. For front/back focusing lenses it makes sense but for new equipment just out of the box? That's just goofy.

If I was ONLY sending in equipment that seemed to function properly, then I would agree. But considering I'm sending in a camera and a lens that are having some issues, I don't see the harm in sending in a 2nd lens to be calibrated specifically to the camera body. I've talked to a number of people who thought they had properly functioning lens, but for one reason or another, ended up sending it in with the camera and it came back better than before.

Considering I have only one camera body that will be gone, there is no downside to sending in the 50mm as well as far as I'm concerned.

Be careful, whatever lens goes to Canon comes back with a lot of dust and other problems. I wouldn't send anything to them unless I have to.

What is the basis of this claim?
