Comparing it to the EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM I had, it's definitely sharper wide open. The 24mm used to sharpen noticeably at f3.2, but I can't really see much difference stopping down the 22. It's probably there, I just can't really see it. Maybe I just need to take some more shots. Now tossing up between the 40mm pancake, or the older 35mm f/2 with an adapter. Chuck in the 85mm f/1.8, or the 100 f/2, maybe the EF-s 60mm macro, and you would have yourself a ripping good lightweight and very cheap setup with very very good IQ. Only my 2 cents. Both are solid lenses. I returned the 40mm only because I found it too close in FL to the 35/2 that I already owned. That and the STM focusing is still a little weird to me, but I'm getting more and more used to it thanks to the M. I also just bought the EF 85/1.8, should be here tomorrow bobbyz wrote in post #16422407 Sigma is sharper at f2 than 22mm f2. I'd hope so given the price difference! Don't want to spend nearly double on the 35 IS (compared to the plain Jane 35), and I've never used the old 35, so it's a bit of a tossup. This time round I want to collect a series of fastish primes, at a reasonable cost, with decent IQ. Not interested in collecting L's just for the sake of L's.

To me there wasn't a lot of difference between the 35/2 and the 40/2.8 aside from a stronger vignette on the 35mm wide open. For me the extra stop of light was worth the louder focus motor. The old 35/2 is pretty darn sharp wide open, I've posted several samples from it in this thread

Why in the world were you shooting at F/22? Open it up to 2.8 and you wouldn't have had any noise issues. 3200 is pretty clean, even in bad lighting! - Alex Corona Sony A7, Canon 7DM2/EOS M, Mamiya 645/67
