Peter,

To be honest, after using the "M" for a couple of weeks I find myself touching the screen on my 6D and 7D and wondering what's wrong. You'll very quickly get over the "this is weird" stage and progress to the "why aren't they all like this" phase.

so for adapters, is this all correct?

we've got the meike available, for $40 ships from china, 3-4 weeks time
the fotodiox ships from amazon $60 available in 2 days time
Canon OEM version off ebay for $76 ships from hong kong 1 1/2- 2 1/2 weeks

part of me is almost thinking of going with the canon version, but if the others are just as good, maybe the fotodiox, just to have it sooner...any others that i'm missing out on?

I'd ask yourself, honestly, if you are really ever going to use adapted lenses on this camera. It sounds nice on paper, but in practice, it's just not really all that enjoyable to use as a setup when you also have a real DSLR sitting there. You'll also find that the setup is not all that compact with even smallish DSLR lenses. Maybe its just me, but my adapter sits totally unused past the initial testing.

I don't have the Canon EOS adapter, but I bought an FD to M adapter off Amazon for like $20 last year and have been having a blast with all of my old FD manual lenses.

I think the M works well with old manual lenses, it certainly fixes the auto focus issues :-)
I just wish my 50 focused to infinity!

Here is the Moon taken from Brisbane on 5th April 2014 using the EOS-M with Canon 400mm F5.6L plus the Canon Extender II EF x2, giving an effective focal length of 800mm at F11.

The lens/extender combination had no problems with auto focus.

The camera/lens was mounted on an astronomical tracking mount and the exposures taken during twilight.

Cheers

Dennis

My EOS M arrived yesterday after a flight in from T-Dimension in Hong Kong. Keenly anticipated, though I was a little concerned at two points in the reviews:
1. The autofocus speed.
2. The dinky little lens.

I've never seen anything written badly about the 22mm pancake, the lens is an absolute dream.(neither about it's size, heck most prefer smaller lighter lenses)

Skyring wrote in post #16811193 (external link)
One irritation is the two different lenses have two different diameters. 43mm and 52mm, so I've sent away for two different sets of filters. More kit to tote.

All you need is a simple(and super cheap) 43mm to 52mm ring:

I use my single Cokin P kit on all my cameras/lenses from 39mm to 78mm:

I used to use mine with a 50mm prime everywhere I went, so I disagree. I'd keep the 22mm or the 50mm in a pocket and the M in the other pocket, great combo. The only reason I sold my adapter was that whenever I need a more than one lens kit now I just bring the X-E1. I might pick up a third party dumb adapter sometime though since I really only need it for one of my 50mm's.

thanks for the dose in reality...the only times that i could really see myself using it, is when i go backpacking, but even then i could see myself choosing to lug the larger camera just because it's what i've always done

i'll probably still get the meike adapter, just because i still feel it's probably worth the $40 just to have

Really? It AF'd at f11? I'll have to try that. That would be cool.

1800 Euro!!!

Better off with a 50mm f1.4 on FF for that kind of money.

.85*1.6 = f1.35 equiv.

Hi Mark

The same lens/extender combo will AF on my 5D Mk III in Live View (not through optical viewfinder) so it must be a property of the Live View functionality. In the late afternoon when the Moon was washed out in blue skies, the AF on the EOS M hunted, but as soon as twilight appeared, the AF had no problems due to the increased contrast between the Moon and sky background.

Cheers

Dennis

Agree on the small lens. It's lovely.

Thanks for the pointer on the conversion ring. I sent off for one immediately - and spent a while browsing all the other interesting items in the ebay shop.

If I understand what you're saying you're wrong, the aperture doesn't change with the 1.6 crop factor, only the focal length. In this case the focal length would be 136mm as you state but the f/stop would remain f/0.85.

If I'm not grasping your point then feel free to ignore my coment...

i believe he's talking about for DOF purposes

a FF 50mm f1.4 would be exactly that

a crop with a 40mm f.85 would give the DOF of a f1.35 lens on a FF camera

it's similar to why f1.2 L primes don't make that much sense on a crop camera if one is after small DOF...they're really expensive, almost the price of a FF camera many times...you can use a FF camera, and something like an 85mm f1.8 over a 50mm f1.2 on a crop, and have shallower DOF with the FF set up
