Shot from this evening. Stupidly, I didn't wait around for the sunset colors because I didn't think any would develop. Well of course they did.

Sadly this may be my last post to this thread. I finally caved and have an M6 that should be to me this week. That means the M probably won't see much use and will probably sit in a bag in the closet.

you haven't missed anything - just a M5 without the viewfinder! ;-)a

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

I had read about the M6 didn't realise it was out yet - a negative feature for me in not having view finder. Would never buy a camera without view finder.

I was deleting photos off an old SD card today and came across these. Am not shooting many photos with camera so I decided to turn it into a primary video cam.

It fit rather nicely inside the SmallRig cage designed for the Sony A7.

So the 90EX flash unit can be had for $30 new (white box) on Amazon. I picked one up since that's as cheap as lunch for two on any given day. Worth at least checking it out. Originally I planned to get a 270EXII, but just never did because it wouldn't be a vertical bounce source when camera is in portrait orientation, only horizonal, so figured it wasn't worth it. I already have powerful flashes if I need that duty anyways. I really was just interested in having the tiniest ETTL capable flash for fill flash to simply fill minor shadows in low light. It's not going to beat down the sun or anything, it's a wee little flash with minimal output, and it's not meant to provide key light from 20 yards. But it actually works quite well, as well as the on-board flash of the larger body dSLR units, as a small ETTL fill flash source. And the camera itself still retains its very small footprint, which I like. Flash control is also very simple, selecting 2nd curtain and ETTL's compensation values. Fantastic as a small fill flash. Not ideal for a key light. But with something this size that is expected.

If anyone was on the fence about picking one up (by the way, it works on all EOS cameras, not just the M series) for a body that lacks on-board flash for simple spontaneous ETTL capable fill, it does the job, and at $30 on Amazon (white box), it's cheap enough to not care if it's an awesome flash or not (its not). For $30 it's good, if you consider it as an ETTL fill flash.

We use the EOS-M as a subtle spontaneous camera at events, family, outings, etc, and I use it for when I'm out fishing or kayaking, etc. Having a flash is always the one thing I'm always wanting to bring, and my big flashes are awkward and big on the EOS-M and defeat the point of having a small system in hand. Also we use the M for this because we can hand it to anyone, with its touch screen and face tracking, and they can point it at us, touch the screen and the M will focus on faces and take an image. You can leave it with wide aperture, set ISO and AV mode with the flash onaboard with ETTL and set the compensation and it does a really great job of exposing and filling shadows for great lower light images that are clean and sharp, while others are having to use LED flash on their cellphones and getting dark backgrounds due to not having "fill" flash capability.

Nothing special, just an example of the 90EX used at an event, set for 2nd curtain & fill flash ETTL, so that you get clean exposures, but not the sterile flashed look:

Comparison size, EOS-M + 22 Pancake + 90EX compared to my Galaxy S7. Image quality the M's APS-C sensor crushes the tiny sensor of the S7, and the added flash with fill capability is vastly superior to the LED flash of the S7. Not looking to challenge a large camera system and large flash system. The M and 90EX however absolutely crush using a modern cell with a "good imaging system" like the S7, without being a big bulky thing to carry around. The M is still very small, subtle, and super quiet, and can do things that smartphones cannot (high ISO, depth of field control, quality of bigger better pixels, quality of ETTL flash, cheaper than a smart phone by several hundred!). The size is still quite small and that's the reason I even have one.

The origional M sure can take a beating. It's been my default hiking/backpacking/canoeing camera for years now and it keeps on kicking despite some pretty obvious wear and tear.
