Hello everyone. I currently have a T3i, but am getting my 5D3 tomorrow. I read somewhere that there is some things different between Canons Digital Photo Professional for the two cameras. I am not sure what to do, as I cannot delete the DPP that I have used with the T3i, as I would more than likely lose all of my photos...but there are a lot of photos in there, enough that it would be a PITA to archive them all on CD. I do not have a zip drive or a secondary hard drive, so the file transfer would be long, and would use up a bunch of CD's.

Can anyone offer any ideas or suggestions on what to do? Is putting all the T3i photos on CD's, then deleting the DPP so I can install the "new" DPP my only option? Or is there a way possible to install both programs, and have a DPP program for each camera?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Your new 5DIII will come with the updated version of DPP on disk. When you install it, it will simply update the previous version of DPP to the latest. Updating to the latest version WILL HAVE NO EFFECT ON SAVED IMAGES. Only the program itself (your images are not part of the software) updates. You can rest easily that your images will not be lost or altered.

Install the newer version of DPP. You can install it right over the top of the existing one as an upgrade. No other action is necessary. It will not affect your existing files and it will continue to read them fine.

As others have said, no problem.

Actually, once you install what comes with the 5DIII, then go to the Canon website and get the latest of DPP and the EOS Utility, both of which had upgrades just a few days ago. The text concerning the latest and greatest follows. You should do this upgrade even though your camera or lens might not be listed as there are typically other subtle changes as well.

Canon Digital Photo Professional 3.12.40 and EOS Utility 2.12.0 Updater Released

You seem to not understand what DPP is and what it does. Your photos are not "in" DPP; they are in whatever folder you put them into when you transferred them from the memory card to the computer. DPP is in a different folder entirely, your system's Programs folder. When you open a photo in DPP, it reads the data in the photo file and constructs a preview display using that data, but that does not mean the photo is in DPP any more than when you watch The Late Show, Jay Leno is in your TV. You can remove DPP from your computer and your photo files will not be directly affected in any way, although if you used DPP to edit them in the past and saved the edits, the files will contain editing instructions that only DPP can read.

Just go to the Canon web site and download the latest versions of DPP and EOS utility from there. There is no need to install the DPP software from the disk you receive with your new camera. All versions of DPP work for all Canon Dslrs, there is no special version for any Canon camera. The version you download from the 5DmkIII page will be the same as the one you download from the T3i page. Congratulations on your new camera, it is awesome.

This is true for DPP but not for EOS Utilities. I know the OP is just talking about DPP but I wanted to make sure to clear up this point.

If I look at xTi for example in Win 7 version of EOS utility is 2.9.0
If I look at 5DMkIII in Win 7 version of EOS utility is 2.12.0

So apparantly Canon thinks you do need to download the right version of EOS utility for your camera.

That is interesting WaltA, I never noticed that. I am using the latest DPP and EOS utility on both my XTi and 7D and both run fine for me as far as I can tell. I wonder if there is some compatibility issue, or they have just not bothered to update the XTi page? Interesting, thanks for pointing that out.

Yeah, I'm running the "next to latest" and it works for my xTi and 5Dc.

Mind you, I don't use it for much. I use a card reader and don't do tethering. I just like to have the latest versions of everything.

And when I look for my 5Dc theres no EOS utility at all under windows 7. When I switch to XP EOS Utility is 2.7.3

Go figure

Well, I wouldn't think there would be any problems with DPP, but figured it was well worth the time asking. My old computer crashed, and I literally lost thousands of pictures- I never want to go through that again. There are a few differences in the newer software, as the photo stitching program is included in the d/l, and also- now, even the photos I take with my little HP M417 go directly to the "download" folder- but thats just a matter of changing preferences.

GES- Thank you. I have only got to take the 5D3 out once (yesterday), and I love it. It is huge too, being used to my T3i and XSi. I knew the full frames are bigger than the cropped frames, but you don't realise how much difference there is until you put them side by side. A lot heavier too.

Anyway, thanks for the replies.
