this weekend was the last round of the WA Rally Championship
plenty of action with 2 competitors within reach of the championship.

Leigh Hynes won the event in his Impreza

Alex Stone finished second, netting enough points to take the championship from Hynes

Razvan Vlad blew a gearbox early in the day, but is always spectacular in the fwd fiesta

18 year old Dylan King took 1st 2wd and the 2wd championship, whilst taking 5th overall, ahead of a number of WRXs and EVOs, Dylan has only been rallying for two years (his first event was a few weeks after getting his learners permit)

Sean Keating and Caleb Ash's day went wrong in SS5 when they clipped a bank and rolled.
both crew were ok, and were able to drive the car out of the stage after it had been flipped back onto its wheels by a road closure team

any comments or criticism is welcome, i only managed to get to 2 stages, and i left my polariser at home too.
the weather was perfect for shooting, nice soft light, and enough rain to keep the dust down (safari rally is traditionally a very hot dusty event)

I dont see many compositions in these ,think you could of used soft light and dust better with some more original, less predictable shots.

They are well enough done but lack variety and vision for me.

Show us some of your scenery please.

thanks chrispons

i need to start looking at the roads before the event - this time around i was just looking in the roadbook for what looked like good locations, which doesnt always work too well.

most of this event is fairly tight forest, so the scenery is typically trees, trees and more trees.

i also need to get out of the rut of shooting safe boring stuff

Truthfully I have no idea of the Australian topography, but have seen stuff on rallies from the WRC when it visits.

Knowledge is everything as is experience from previous events.

And we all have days when it just does not work out as we hoped.

Follow the light ,is my best advice ,consider vary carefully how it will fall on the cars and drivers.

Sometimes an average spot can be very good with right light and a good spot terrible if you are there at the wrong time .

One thing the sun is always predictable where it is going to be :)

and apps like Sunseeker help when working with stage maps.

i would love if this event still used the old stages around the sotico/bunnings area that you would have seen on TV back when Rally Australia (WRC) was in Perth - im sure you would have seen the one bit of road that every rally fan in Australia knows - the downhill run, over 2 big jumps and through the water splash.

i have been watching the Incar footage from some of the cars over the weekend, and i have found what appears to be some good locations for next year, now i just need to figure out how to get to them, and if the sun will be in the right place (hopefully the stages stay the same next year)

Look forward to seeing the results,Ben .

Not into Apps (new for an old geezer like me) ,but will check it out.

Bunnings , awesome, where Colin Mc Crae was so spectacular.
