Hello!
My wife and I are heading to Florida soon (beginning of November) for a family trip. I was hoping some of you would give me ideas/hints of the best places to bird in that area... Any kinds of birds - I would bet we don't have many of the same here in Colorado!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Well ...... I don't think there are too many birds in the caves which is what it is known for but maybe a local person will chime in. I have been on the Homosassa river a ton and Pelicans are in abundance. You might see other cool birds on the river.

What you might get more lucky with is seeing some Manatee if you are out in a boat. Get your self an underwater cheapy and go swimming with them while you are there ;)

Make sure that you go to Homosassa Springs State Park. It is the state wildlife park and while they have a lot of birds in open pens, wild birds fly in and out to visit. Its a good spot to see Wood Storks, Pileated Woodpeckers. If you go in by the boat you should get some pretty good close-ups of Wood Ducks. Its a great spot to visit in the Spring because GBH, Anhinga and Wood Stork all nest there in the tree that grow in the alligator pond.

Thanks for the ideas! We are planning on visiting the State Park. We will do some boat time, so that is a great idea - and I can finally get a duck shot!

Another place that you should check out is the Lower Suwannee NWR. I haven't been there yet but it is on my list for this winter.
