Hi folks,

I'm looking to make a few purchases over the next few weeks/months.

Firstly i shoot portrait photography - friends family etc - the only commercial work i've done is portfolio building for MUA's and models. I've done a few and got quite good. Got a nice Bowens dual set studio set up. Slowly over time i've added stuff and got a nice collection of gear - softboxes, O-ring flash, pop up back ground etc - all added gradually as i save £20-30 a week for my togging equipment.

My next big purchase is a Sigma lens - i'm looking at the Sigma 24-70 - The canon 17-55 but thats £200+ beyond what i have to spend now. (which is around £250)

After the Sigma lens i'm looking to buy a lastolite hilite of either 6x7 or 8x7. I could pick up the 8x7 for around £250 but i want the lens first.

With such a big hilite - would it be feasible to have two speedlite's (which i have already) light this up or would a studio level light be the way to go?

What i'm wondering is should my next purchase be the hilite or another pair of bowens lights and THEN the hilite - thus having suitable lighting in place. I guess in theory i could use my current two lights but then I dont want to be left short in front of the camera.

It's important to have the right tools, but the tools mean nothing unless you have a compelling reason to use them. Evaluate your images and buy what you think will be able to take them to the next level.

The Hilite works with one speed light, but two produces much more even lighting of the Hilite.
Even with strobes..if you meter the Hilite..you will find a little uneven lighting.
BUT...I have to say that I have used it with a single light and had very acceptable results.
I found the Hilite an awesome light modifier to have in the arsenal.
I sold my 7x6 some time ago, but plan on the 8x7 purchase soon.
Hone...you'll love it.

Same here, love it. A single speed light or in my case, i use a single studio strobe inside. Works great.
