Hey Guys,

I need a heavy portfolio critique. I'm getting ready to apply for a job and I need fresh eyes. Please, don't hold back anything.

Thanks!

Let me know what you like/hate and what I should take out. There are 28 images in there and I would like to get it down to at least 25.

THANKS A TON!
-Brian

Really nice work on the whole!

After a quick look over the 28 photos (don't have much time to view in too much detail at the minute), I'd say drop photo number 10 and possibly 11. I'm not too sure about the framing on photo 24 and I think the colours/white balance may be a little off on photo 21? That might just be my monitor/eyes though.

Really good portfolio with lots of variety though and I especially like the football (soccer) shots.

#21 was shot in the MU Arena. The entire place is yellow. Yellow seats, walls, ceiling, and floors. I even used a custom WB for the game. I might have to take another shot at fixing the color.

Thanks for the advice! I really like soccer/football =)

Overall I like the pictures, but it seemed that all, but the tennis shots, were just a little off on the skin tone. Seemed like you could dial down a little yellow. The action is good. The shot of basketball looked out of focus, like the shutter speed wasn't quite fast enough. I see where you mentioned that everything in the MU Arena is yellow and it may be giving a cast, but when I look at NFL, NHL, MLB or NBA photos on web or mags the colors always seem perfect and that may get you the job.

Hope this helps and I hope you get the job. You are very good.

Thanks for the advice, I just checked a few other MU shots "Getty/AP" and I don't see any yellow like in mine. I might pull the image till I get it corrected.

Really nice variety. Most are very good. What stood out to me was:

1. Some noise reduction might make the night, high ISO shots a bit cleaner looking
2. The basketball shot might be a throwaway due to missed focus
3. The pit stop racing shot is great. The Camry shot not so much. Looks out of focus

Just off the top I'd get rid of:
14, nothing really happening
12, attempted pick at first, my remote can capture that one
23, no prominent shooter, it is a so what image
26, blown background, nice shot but not best for a job portfolio, lighting was not in your favor
24, did you crop his head in camera? not perfection for portfolio
15, fix the color and it is decent, not outstanding
19, what the heck is on his nose? why is this only 412k? severe crop? loss of quality.
20, blurry, should be tack sharp
Just something to consider: Overall I don't like any of the odd crops. Depending on the job you are after, your editor or someone else will decide what/how to crop. If you took care of that for them they might not be able to use the shot for a layout because you forced their hand by eliminating the rest of what's there.
My overall feeling is that you are presenting shots where you got lucky; Oh look the umpires eyes are closed, how funny. Oh look, there's a butterfly on this guys nose, awkward. Oh look, the pitcher's tongue is all curly and stuff, doh. Is that the job you are trying for? Hallmark greeting cards?
