And I'm so geeked! I just ordered the 50mm f1/4 from B&H and I'm so excited to get it! Now I've got to go out and buy a camera bag that will fit both my lenses in it with room for at least a few more. I think that I'll start saving my pennies for the 17-40L. For now my kit lense will have to do if I need more reach and my feet just can't take me there. So is that a decent spread? 18-55, 50mm and 17-40L? I probably wont be getting anything after that for a goooooood long while.

Congrats on your purchases. Once you start using the 1740L you won't touch the kit lens anymore. Until then the kit lens will do you well. Enjoy.

Well, you'll find that you'll replace your 18-55 with the 17-40, and you'll have a good prime in the 50mm f1.4, but you don't have anything in telephoto range. If you don't need the reach, you'll be fine, but if you get into wildlife, glamour or sports photography, you're eventually going to want the extra length and reach that the telephotos give you.

50 at the longest end could be a handicap at times. You can let go off your kit lens after the 17-40 and maybe you can plan for something a bit longer as the next lens.

Oh, yeah, telephoto! Now, anyone have a good recommendation for a telephoto for around $300? Woohoo! More research!
