I have a 16-35L from the film days. On the EOS 3 it got great landscapes but of course, on the crop bodies it doesn't get so wide. Eventually I'll get a full frame digital. A digital FF is just starting to get into the affordable category with the 5D mkII and 6D.
I would like to get an ultrawide zoom that starts at 8 or 10 mm that will work on the crop as well as the FF bodies so that rules out the EF-S mount lenses.
Does such a lens exist?
Would the Canon fisheye lens fit the bill here? Can you straighten out the fisheye photos?

Sigma 12-24 is your best bet. Look for version II.

This sigma seems pricy considering the reviews. I assume my 16-35L (type 1) would perform better on the full frame bodies.
If its going to take $900 plus to get a lens that works, may as well upgrade to FF and get the 5D mkii at $1700+ or the 6D or $2000.

How does this Sigma compare on a FF camera?

Sure the 16-35 is better than the Sigma, but you want something wider.

The widest non-fisheye lens is the Sigma 12-24, thus the suggestion.

Tokina 11-16 on a crop and works as a 16mm prime on ff. No danger of Mirror damage.

Fisheye Zenitar 16mm f/2.8 could be an idea. Or Samyang ultra-wide 14mm f/2.8.

You could go with a 5Dc and keep your 16-35...it might save you enough to keep the crop as well if that's not already an option. I don't think any zoom gets wider than about sixteen on full frame, the 12-24 vignettes quite a bit as you get any wider than that from what I've seen.

The only wider option for the 16-35 on FF is the 14mm (third-party and fisheye not included)

Not true: the Sigma 12-24mm really is an FF lens. At 12mm you get 122 degrees across the diagonal.

But the price of the Sigma takes me half the way to a FF.

Just bite the bullet and get a "crop only" ultrawide.... Canon 10-22, Tokina 11-16/2.8 or 12-24/4, one of the Sigma 10-20 or 8-16, Tamron 10-24.

Some of them can even be used on full frame. I've tested the Tokina 12-24 on my 5DII and it works to around 18 or 19mm wide before it starts to vignette. And, yes, I can confirm that some have tested the Toki 11-16 at 16mm with pretty good success. I've also seen the Canon 10-22 modified to use (partially) on full frame. But why bother? You already have a 16-35.

I use both crop and full frame cameras. I got the Toki 12-24/4 for use on croppers and keep it as my only "crop only" lens. I generally use a 20/2.8 as my widest on FF, but have considered getting the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm for occasional purposes (the Canon 14mm is superb, but just too expensive for me because I'd be using a lens like this only on rare occasion... and the manual focus/manual aperture of the Samyang/Rokinon wouldn't be too much of a hassle on an ultra wide).

The Sigma 12-24 is the widest, non-fisheye available for full frame (Siggy 8-16 is the equiv. for crop cameras). It has a lot of inherent distortion effects... but that's not surprising in such an extreme lens and there are some softwares that can fix images in post production.

So you want a lens that does everything and costs nothing? A common desire to date unsatisfied.
