I have a 7D, a 24-70L, and a 580EXII flash. I'm pretty much giving up on becoming a professional photographer, so I was thinking of selling everything (except the flash) and getting a G12 or something similar.

My question is will the 580 EXII work with the G series cameras? I see they have a hot shoe so I assume it will.

Also, any assistance in selecting the right G series camera would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Dan

580EXII works fine with my G11. Looks kinda funny as the flash is bigger than the camera but it works fine.

I've been considering the same thing even though I never had any desire to be a pro, I get just as good of results out of my G series than my 7D, and yes I know it's a problem with the photographer.. lol

You're gonna miss your gear! Little cameras are nice to have and they certainly have their place, but if you really enjoy making photographs and want good light handling and creative Dof you should hold onto you stuff. Now, if it was simply a tool to start a business and you just want something smaller to carry around to capture the moment, than go for it. Not saying you can't get VERY creative with small cameras. A couple of my favorite shots were taking with 'G' series cameras. It's just that they can't do some of the stuff the DSLR's can. My 2 cents. BTW, the flash will work.

I have the 580ex on my G1x but the size doesn,t make it feel right. Also if I was you I would p/x the 24-70 lens for whatever G camera you choose. Keep the 7d body for the time being, then when you find out the G camera is not quite wide enough you can opt for a Sigma 10-22 or similar.
As for which G camera, it depends what type of photography you will be undertaking.

You may or may not. Depends a lot on what you shoot and what not. You certainly give up fast handling, though the G15 is better than previous G's. You give up some IQ, though not much if you got a G1X.

This is a good read for you wherein another poster had the same question. https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1125526

I enjoy using my small cameras a lot and certainly take it more places, I also sometimes enjoy the no nonsense handling of my dslr.

Not quite the same but I have always used G cameras. Recently I bought a T2i just to see how I would like the dslr. I am not and never will be a pro. A so-so lens for any dslr starts arourd $360.00 (EF 85mm f/1.8 USM) and jumps to thousands in the blink of an eye. It is difficult for me to justify laying out that much cash for something that is an enjoyable hobby but will never be more than a hobby. 2 grand for a lens or: a long weekend in Austin with my Lady; a short evening in Vegas and that light in her eyes? The G12 will capture those memories. I don't know, I find myself grabbing the G12 and throwing the 1 & 1/2 cubic foot case with flashes, spare batteries, filters and etcetera in the back of the van. Or pop the 220EX (270EX II did not exist when the G3 came out) on the G12 and leave everything else... I guess it just depends on what/who you prefer. my 25 cents, nothing more...

Gil

I have a 430EX II but it is too massive, I use it off camera with the G12 & T2i. Would seriously consider the G15 but Swivel screen and 2 year old G12 are deal breakers. another 2 cens:)

I don't think I could ever make that move. I will never make money from photography. No interest in shooting for others just for myself.

This is what I'm planning to do. I have agreed to a sale on the 24-70 but am having a very hard time actually going through with it...

I know what you mean, its a great lens. Now that the mk 2 has come out at that ridiculous high price a second hand 24-70 is a " hot cake" at the moment.

My 430 EX II works just fine with my G12. I was surprised to find that my Elinchrom skyport transmitter also functions perfectly in triggering wireless flash. The skyport doesn't even work with the Rebel T3i in live view mode!

I'm keeping my 40D for now. If I had a 60D or 7D, I would be even more inclined to do so. The IQ difference is significant, and video mode on the G12 leaves much to be desired. I am, however, selling my big L zoom. The little compact camera has spoiled me.

Is not being pro the only reason for wanting to sell, lots of hobbyists use a 7D... the G12 is a nice camera but not going to come close to your current gear. If size is the issue I'd consider cameras like the Fuji X-pro 1 or XE-1
