Alright I have 200+ full res photos I need to batch sharpen. I have lightroom 4 and Photoshop cs5. I tried to google around but couldn't find exactly how to do it.

I tried the output sharpening in lightroom when I exported but it really didn't seem to do anything.

All help is greatly appreciated.

*EDIT*

Stumbled upon someone saying you need to create an action, which I figured out how to do.. I think. So as far as I can tell it won't save the files after it sharpens them. I would have to manually save each file after?

Also for people that batch sharpen what would your kind of default settings be for sharpening? I'm planning on using USM. Is there a better way?

I would suggest using the Image Processor in Photoshop CS5 to run your batch sharpening action. It can be accessed by clicking FIle > Scripts > Image Processor.

Thanks I'll give that a try. I made an action for sharpening and that seems like a pretty simple way to run it. Any tips on what settings to use for sharpening?

*Edit*

Used the 5d mII for these photos

Well that's the thing. The photos are going on a disc for a friend. He'll probably print them and possibly throw them online. I applied some sharpening to them and I'm fairly happy with how they turned out. Just glad I know how to do this now.

For mass edits I just use export in LR. I set the file size, sharpen for and amount (which is usually standard) and export. Then I do it again with the size at 800 on the long size for web images. I choose screen and standard again. So easy and efficient. I stopped using sharpening actions for mass edits long ago. I will go into PS for a handful.

I exported a file 3 times for the 3 sharpening amounts and got them printed. You can see a difference. Not huge but it is there. I've had no complaints and it is a huge time saver. No need to keep the Jpegs after.

This would be the easiest way in the end I think. So what file size/dimensions are appropriate?

I also found that doing it through photoshop made the files much bigger. Which is a problem when they try to upload them to places to get printed.

For web, I usually use 800 px longest size. Others use 1024 or 1200 or so.

Saving as a jpg?

File size on a jpg depends on image dimensions (in pixels), compression and amount of detail in the image. This 'detail' includes noise, which may have become a bit more pronounced by the sharpening: More "detail" > larger file size.

People typically print 8 by 10 so I usually set it for 3000 on the long side (to keep the file size small), select the paper type and standard. Sure you have more control in PS for output sharpening but in the long run how many complaints do you get using LR for that?

Sorry I was cur short. The boss was standing behind me tapping her foot - my turn to go to Timmies (Tim Horton's) for coffee. Our Canadian addiction.

I know where you are coming from as had a hard time with LR export sharpening as well. I must have tried the free trial 3 times over a 3 year period. I finally decided to give it a go and did those tests which surprised me. I guess it was that lack of control. When you sharpen in PS you see the results before saving- in LR you don't until after export. I had trouble getting used to that.

As for size I export Jpegs for print @ 3000 on the long side but I am across a thread yesterday. Nicksan and a few others were in it and some numbers were coming in at 3600 and 3888. I had been wondering if I should increase my files just incase. I can't find that thread.

I watched this video last week which I thought was very good. It took me a while to find it again.

If you don't need other things that CS5 will do, this is trivially easy to do in LR. You can sync any settings from one photograph to as many others as you want. It's on the settings menu. Google for instructions on how to do it.

You can use a program like Paint Shop Pro, which has the ability for you to create batch scripts, that can be run on a selected group of photos. For example, I have a batch script that I run on any photos taken above ISO 1600, to denoise the photos, and run the Unsharp Mask, and then file the photo. Separately, I use a different saved script to run the Unsharp Mask only and then file the photo, for photos taken below ISO 1600.

Thanks everyone. I think I've got it all figured out now. I'll export some different sizes to check file sizes and sharpening amount.

Yeah I'm familiar with timmies. We have one where I live in Saskatchewan. I'm not a big coffee guy but there's always a line up there.

Glad you worked it out. If you own a Timmies it is a good as owning a license to print money ;)
