Well......the project did pay well.

That's good, but when you say the money isn't the important part you render the business aspect of it moot. Business is, after all, about making money. It's not about photo credit or pats on the back.

^counterexample: someone new to weddings shoots one free or at a very very low fee and also says money isn't important at this point. This is still business, and in fact may be a solid business strategy for this person.

This thread is relevant to the business section in at least the following way: we have more anecdotal evidence of clients looking for images on flickr. Now whether or not this is good for the photo industry is another question !

I should say that money is not mportant to me with regards to making it through photography. I earn a living with another career.

Question for you. Would you shoot a Rollong Stone cover for free?

That one photo credit alone would make you a boatload of money in the future. So a photo credit might not be so bad after all.

Please proceed, Governor.

Again, this is the Business of Photography section. This is not the Got a Full Time Job So Don't Care section. You should probably post in the sharing section if you're just interested in getting pats on the back.

Photo credits don't make money for anyone except the people who suckered the free photography. No one looks at photo credits. You know what makes money? Referrals from paying customers. People who got free photos are only going to refer more people who expect free photos, if they refer anyone at all. So no, I would not shoot a Rolling Stone cover for free. If anyone can afford to pay it's RS.

Having shot, marketed and sold a few images, making the sale is THAT important if you are in business, or you won't be in it long. The only time I ever traded a photo for a credit is when I donated their limited and descriptive use to an organization that I support.

To the OP: Glad you were able to get onto a book cover and I hope you have more success.

Not judging by this recent thread (although I doubt if "Don't Care" applies to most people):

Got a gig shooting a book cover = business. Congrats!

I can't believe the whining over where this post should be. Shoot more, complain less. My .02.

There's no need to be so hostile. The OP is happy with their bit of success, and our crystal ball does not say whether or not the exposure and contacts will build more success in the future. Who's to say that if the OP could make photography be more lucrative that they wouldn't leave their 'real' job and be a photographer full time? They have to pay their bills just like everyone else, and this was technically a business deal, so yes, it's in the correct section. I hope this is the end of this silliness.

Thank you Joanna. You are very kind.

I retire from my "real job" in 2 and 1/2 years. I will only be 55. Then....I will have plenty of time to pursue other interests.

I've helped many part time and even amateurs sell images, just because it's not a full time gig or making a living does not mean it's not a business deal. Love seeing my work used, to keep creating my work I need to be paid for it; the OP loves seeing his work used, he got paid for it...I see no problem as it definitely was a business transaction.

Will agree with what CD about credit though! Fact is that boatload of money is a mirage on the horizon that never reaches shore. There is absolutely no publicity value in it, the industry does not like those giving it away for free so many times you end up ruining your name more so than helping it.
