What kind of paper do you like to print on, from which maker, and why? It doesn't have to be just paper, if you like metallic prints or something else, tell about it!

For a while, my favorite paper was Epson Premium Luster, because it had this great sheen and contrast that suited a lot of my subject matter. But recently, I've discovered Canson Infinity, and decided to try something altogether new, so I bought a couple A4 25-sheet packs of Arches Aquarelle and Velin Museum rag... Wow.

The Velin rag is probably one of the best matte papers I've ever used, despite the soft textured surface, this paper is fully capable of resolving even the tiniest details; I also love the warm tone it gives off. Photos from my 5D2, processed in PS and sharpened with Nik Sharpener, printed via Epson R2400 were so crisp and detailed that I think I should either buy a loupe or print much bigger. The Aquarelle rag is basically the same paper, but with a much larger and rougher texture, that I think would work well on larger images (no smaller than 17x20" for sure).

Next on my to-try list is the Platine paper, to see if it's significantly better than my Luster paper, which I fully expect to be so. I'm really impressed with the Canson stuff so far, but which paper has left you with an impression?

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

Hahnemüle and InovaArt both have very nice FibaPrint/Baryta papers.

I once tried Hahnemüle Baryta over at a friend's place, and it seemed too cold and crunchy looking for my taste, like someone over-sharpened the image. Maybe it's color management issues since he just got his printer.

I like Hahnemules "Torchon", a highly textured matte card. Not cheap but it has a wonderful "I'm expensive and I'm worth every penny" quality.

Hahnemuhle Sugar Cane. Rough textured, recycled from sugar cane and cotton and excellent for color and B&W. printed with Lucia inks (Canon) it also is a long lasting paper/ink combo as tested at Aardenburg Imaging & Archives.

Kernowek St. Ives canvas (hard to find - UK based). They infuse the individual strands of the canvas with the ink receiver instead of coating it. The result is a much more natural looking fiber pattern (instead of a puddled look) and a lighter, more breathable canvas. This also tests extremely well with regard to longevity when using one of the three big OEM ink sets (Epson, HP & Canon).

Tried Canson Rag Photographique and feel a bit mixed about it. It's a nice smooth paper, but I found it a bit boring.

Interesting... but doing a Google search didn't reveal any leads for me, is this a mail-order from a magazine kinda thing? that's so 90's.

Same, I was at the B&H store looking at the sample notebooks they have with images printed on each paper type and I also felt indifferent about that particular paper. I think I only didn't like a few other samples they had, including the Etching paper (Velin looked better to me), but it was also the most worn-out, so... hmm.

Cheaper than what I paid for the Canson paper :) But I agree on the "card" aspect, so far when I've handed anyone a piece of paper that doesn't flex, the impression was generally guaranteed to be positive. Protip: If a paper has a 2xxgsm and 3xxgsm version, get the heavier one...you're already paying $1.50 a sheet, you bourgeois.
I think we're going to see a tendency towards matte papers here, maybe it's that people who print their own images do so for fine art purposes, and matte looks very slick for fine art.

Thanks, this really helps with the search. One site has it listed as 140gbp, which is about $225, a rather competitive price with the Canson canvas, a shame that they don't have 44" rolls though.

I'd contact them. They're a small company and might be willing to accommodate...

Forgot to ask, but do you use a canned profile for printing on this canvas, or did you make your own?

My two favorite paper manufacturers are Hahnemüle and Ilford. I use a rag art paper from Hahnemüle for some of my larger printing. For everyday personal printing I use a Galerie pearl from Ilford. Anything done for a client goes to an outside lab unless someone needs it tomorrow.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Interesting thing going on with the aluminum there. I'm also aware of a method where the print is made on glass, or some sort of film that is then bound to plexiglass... all of these methods sound pricy though.

Edit: Ouch, $500 for a 40x60"? Maybe sometime in the future.
