Glossy or Matte?

I have a quick question for the pros...

What is generally considered "better", glossy or matte prints? I understand that personal preference comes into play here. But, let's say you are getting a bunch of wedding prints made for a customer (and the customer didn't specify a preference), would you normally get glossy or matte prints? Why?

The conventional wisdom is matte. My clients prefer matte 3 to 1 or so. I personally prefer glossy for most images, metalic better yet for many.

Matte for sure. Lustre is good, and I have to try metalic some time.

good question, i thought that glossy was preferred. maybe i was wrong.

Except for certain images, I have always processed my prints with a non-glossy finish. It's easier to see the image under varying light conditions with a matte finish. I also think that since most living things are relatively soft, it's good to have images of them appear to be soft. I have deliberately printed some of my hard-contrast images on glossy materials for the effect.

In general, I see glossy prints (at least the small ones - typically 4"x6") as cheap-looking "drug-store" prints.

Thanks for feedback everyone. Matte prints have always been my personal preference. I picked up about 200 photos (matte) yesterday at our local camera store, and overheard the guy at the counter tell another customer that glossy is better but that it's a pretty even split among their customers. Makes me wonder if it is cheaper for them to make glossy prints.

HP has a "Soft Gloss" paper which looks like a matte with a eek (read; pinch, lil' bit, tiny, itsy-bitsy, wee-bit) more shine to it. That and I got some at staples buy 1 get 1 free. $14 for 120. The full name is "HP Premiun Plus Photo Paper, Soft Gloss"
