The one lens I am really missing for my kit is a wide angle. Not opposed to a crop only but might want to consider full frame compatible. Trying to keep it under $1000 for ideas.

is the use of filters necessary?

If not, for crop the Sigma 8-16 is amazing.

If you need to use filters, for crop, the 10-22 is pretty awesome.

For ones that are compatible with FF.... the 17-40 is nice, but not very fast or very wide.. The Version II Sigma 12-24 is supposed to be on par with the 8-16, but I don't have firsthand experience with it.

My vote is for the 10-22, awesome lens for a non-L Canon lens.

Canon 10-22mm is hands down the best wide angle for a crop you can get.

However, you should do a search on this. Lots of threads on this subject that will help reinforce your decision.

For me, a no brainer, the Canon 10-22. I have shot with a few others and while all outstanding, all are just a tad shy of the 10-22. (except for price).

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

It's hard to recommend a WA that works for both crop and FF since there's such a big difference in FOV between the two. Your best bet may be to get the Canon 10-22 used and then sell if you go FF later. It's a popular lens so you shouldn't have difficulty offloading whe you're ready.

OTOH, the 10-22 is nice, but it suffers from a lot of CA.

But I wouldnt.

Just buy the 10-22 and sell it late if you change.

Buy the best lens for what you have NOW... not "one that is ok now but wont be all that great until i get myself an FF cam" You can always sell it later...

The best UWAs on crop are the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, Sigma 8-16 and the Canon 10-22

The Tokina is best for low light work, as its f/2.8 constant, but its got a limited focal range compared to the other lenses, and its not as wide

The Sigma 8-16 is massively wide, There are VERY few lenses wider (Basically the Sigma 8-16 on Nikon DX or the Sigma 12-24 on a FF cam..) it just cant take filters...

The Canon 10-22 is a good do-everything UWA, Good range, Good sharpness, and superb flare resistence, Probubly the best of the three for landscapes (Takes filters and has less flare than the Tokina and speed doesnt matter as much for landscape)

The only UWA thats acceptable for crop and full frame is the Sigma 12-24 II, Which is a great lens, But its just not worth it on a Crop cam as its not as wide and its a lot more expensive than the others...

Tokina is supposed to be doing a 11-16 mkII with better coatings and flare control but I havnt heard much about it yet.

IMO 8mm is very tricky to use well and 95% of the time I would want to use it I would also want to use filters.
