I ordered a set of extension tubes and am wondering if I use them with a lens that has image stabilization (or OS, VC etc) will this make a difference? Should I disable the stabilization, or will it help me?

Canon 6D & 7D. Panasonic GX85 and a number of ever changing lenses.

You should disable IS if you use a tripod and it doesn't offer anything if you use a flash, which is usually the case at 1:1 or higher magnification.
It will only be useful when you shoot at a smaller magnification and natural light, without a tripod.

thanks for that answer - but that wasn't the question
the question wasnt the tripod - but rather the ETs

IS works fine with ETs.

I would just keep IS on. Why turn it off even with a tripod? It doesn't hurt quality at all does it?
I have a set of ET's and haven't changed my IS on any of my shots.

Once an axis is locked with IS on it bugs out and produces artifacts in the image which appears similar to camera shake. Once you are on a tripod, IS effectively produces camera shake, rather than stopping it.

I have a set of ET's and haven't changed my IS on any of my shots.

Although new lenses are supposed to have tripod sensing IS, this is only sort-of true. If you half-press the shutter and let the IS settle down it (probably) won't go wonky. But certainly if you just take the shot as IS is starting up or are automatically focus stacking you can get blurred shots.

Biggest problem is between about 1/30s to 2s. You may not have had any issue if you have enough light for higher SS or are using a flash.

So I would always say switch off the IS on a tripod, even with new lenses like the 100L. I have been burned by this - set up indoors, sturdy tripod and get 3-4 shots out of a 20 shot focus stack obviously blurred. They realize I had IS on when I'm processing. So it's not like it is immediately obvious on every shot even.

A full contact set like Canon or Kenko ones will still operate the IS, however the effectiveness of traditional IS falls off with increasing magnification.

The exception should be the new IS in the 100L although I can't vouch for its effectiveness.
