Thanks for all the replies. I think I should present some samples ;)

I just like the shot with the zoom more....The 35L shot is already cropped and I am just not totally satisfied. Maybe it's due to the boring angle.

It's really hard to get up close with the 35L when your kid is constantly on the move. And tbh when i am outdoor and have the working space, I keep asking myself why should I get so close when the end result still won't be as good as the zoom @ 200mm? So it kind of defeats the whole purpose if you know what i mean.

Get 135L, it is more suited for shooting your kid when she is playing discreetly. Your 70-200 is great but it is just too big and heavy sometimes. 35L is for shooting in close spaces such as street shooting, or sometimes environmental portraits.

Fuji XE-1, Zeiss ikon, Hasselblad; I love shooting film as a conceptual idea :)

I used to own the 135L and sold it for the 70-200mkII :D

135L was even worse than 35L for chasing her around in my experience....

35L is wide and at least I can crop later. 135L I have no chance and can't even keep up with her...

Out of curiosity why was the 135L bad for chasing her around? Just too long? That lens is on my short list of lenses to pick up when I need something for low light indoor "kids events" at school but fortunately I still have a couple years before I need it.

I can understand. I am having the same issues with my 135L. Just don't use it since getting the 70-200 II. Wishing I had a wide angle instead.

Well because it's really hard to frame and compose when you have an active kid...

For starter I have to kneel down and length isn't the main issue. However when she doesn't stand still it makes it extremely difficult to get the shot you want without chopping off her hands and/or feet

The zoom is much better for the task and just as good/sharp as the 135L. Sure it costs more but it's worth it in the long run imo.

get a 24-70L.

You already have a killers portrait kit using a 100L and 70-200.

The 24-70L will have creamy bokeh at f/2.8 with the full frame and you'll be able to get great shots upclose with 24mm and if you want walk up to your little munchkin and shoot 70mm.

You can get upclose and fill your frame and still be able to blow out the background enough to get pleasing results. Dont regret looking back at photos wishing you had some wide angle. I mix photos with everything from UWA to 200mm

never understood this statement. 35mm just like any focal length can be boring if you use the it to shoot the same subject over and over.

Ok...I just called the camera store and changed my order from 17-40 to 16-35II :D

As much as I like 24-70, I think I have enough primes to cover the normal range. I am going to Hong Kong/Korea in 3 weeks time and UWA is what I'm missing in my kit. So hopefully the 16-35II is good enough to double up as a portrait lens too ;)

I didn't mean the 35mm focal length is boring...i meant my 35mm sample shot was kind of boring, you know, subject right in the middle, boring background etc. I guess that's mainly down to my skills :(

Having said that, I do prefer my 50mm more than the 35mm. It's tighter, I don't need to get as close and more capable to blur out the background....

Rittrato,

I often make the comment that the 35L is boring :)

If you look at an entire folder filled with 35L photos it all looks the same in perspective. Normal looking perspective. This is why if I'm up close I'd rather use my 24Lmk2 since it has a slightly different unique look compared to the 35L.

Put a 16-35L into the mix and you'll get great photos from UWA to safe looking 35mm. Put the 24-70Lmk2 (i want want right now) you can have a huge infinite perspective by foot zooming and flicking your wrist in lens zoom.

The 35L is ultra safe for wedding work since there's little distortion but semi wide angle. Also note gorgeous extremely photogenic models/people in Jordan's awesome work. Note that body language, hand positions, posture not typically found in people untrained infront of a camera. This is where subject matter makes the image as much as skill of the photog. Check out photo group session with hired newbie models to experienced models. You'll see a large amount of photos from the entire photo group to look all the same. This is my example of subject matter (formal training in body language) infront of a camera making the photogs life much easier.

IIRC alot of Jordan's work was with a canon 50 f/1.4 before. Now he's taken several feet forward with the 35L to get very similar perspective as if he used a 50mm. I've admired his work.

Not jojo2fast again

I had some heated discussion on his flickr stream not long ago....his whole stream is done with one lens which i totally do not understand. Repetitive perspective and background, you know sun always behind the models up in the bush etc

I honestly think he gets so popular are partly because he has good looking model to play with who knows how to pose....

A friend of mine has a friend into modeling. He says its got to be one of the easier photo shoots he does (casual shooting for fun). She works the camera and he pushes the shutter button. Not poking fun at photogs that shoots models but I've often seen a portfolio where "I swear I've seen this before" and discovered the same model (probably the same photo group gathering) in someone elses portfolio....LOL!!!
