some key highlights of the pro version:

  1. intergrated keyboard that acts as a cover
  2. built in kick-stand
  3. core i5 quad core cpu
  4. USB 3
  5. full Desktop OS(they demonstrated Lightroom 4!!!!)

this is the perfect travel tablet/ultrabook for the hobbiest/proffesionals who whish to have the power to PP there photo's, store them on external hdd's or back them up in the cloud.

this imo is the tablet i have been waiting for for years. all the ipads and android talets cant do half if not most of the things i have listed.

This to be soo ideal for traveling. Its a no brainer for me.

Thoughts?

The pro version is due next year and will cost about $800-900. I may as well get a small laptop now instead.

a small laptop that will be larger, heavier and bulkier to carry around then a tablet pro? your choice mate.

If you think just because it has a full blown Windows OS and an i5 CPU it's going to keep the pace of a laptop think again. Any tablet has a full blown OS and that in itself is meaningless because technically you can run Photoshop on any Android or iOS tablet. The problem with smaller devices and doing serious editing is going to be HEAT. No tablet on the market has a fan like a laptop does to dissipate heat and due to the small form factors it's impossible to integrate enough passive cooling.

You will be able to do some things which every other tab will be capable of. But you wont have the power needed to render large raw edits quicker then a laptop and you will get no where near the performance of a desktop. So your best bet is to get a remote desktop app like VNC Viewer to interface with your workstation at home or in your studio.

imo - tablets are for internet surfers, emailers, and the app hungry. There is a major lack of content creation on tablets. And there will be for quite some time. M$ is adding something unique to the tablet market; and that is more external device support than the other 2 players has/can out of the box. So hopefully this will help push content creation because of the use of a actual mouse and keyboard and External drives for storage.

If you are looking for something smaller and lighter, wait for the actual ultra books with touch screens they are going to have

As others have sounded off...if you need post processing in the field...a notebook is your best choice. Tablets are great for doing simple post processing i.e resizing/cropping, a little preset enhancements to color etc (Snapspeed on a iPad) and then emailing it or posting to a forum/site or having a client see work on it that you've processed on a notebook first then sharing.

i disagree. until we have read and saw how hot the tablet gets when doing some serious work on it we cannot make a judgement at all. these new tablets will use a new next gen of i5's and i7's that are even smaller die shrink then what you see currently.

I also disagree about lack of power. the tablet will be as powerful as any i5 laptop, just smaller and easier to carry around.

You also cannot run lightroom or photoshop and render a full RAW file and PP it on a android or iOS tablet as the full desktop versions of those apps are not compatible with android or IOS.

You are IMO jumping into conclusions assuming the tablet will run very hot. you have no idea how hot it will run and there is currently no benchmarks or reviews of how hot or cool the new next gem i5's run. So again you cannot assume anything until its been reviewed or shown or you yourself own or have had large extensive play with a windows surface pro

Lightroom looked nice on it though is the memory integrated ie. not user accessible (which was the case for all the ultrabooks I looked at a few months back)? If so a limitation would be the 4GB memory limit for any serious editing.

Hype, hype and nothing but hype. Until Microsoft allow a bunch of journos to get their sticky paws on one then it's all meaningless hype.

yea i think the memory is integrated but dell and the likes will possibly allow u to upgrade the ram manually like a laptop.

Nowhere is this a tablet that will actually replace a whole desktop. far from it. that is not the point of this tablet. the point of this tablet is when u go long distance or abroad, this could be a perfect companion to your DSLR. Would you lot rather spend lots of £££$$$ on 100+gb of memory cards and store all your pics their till u go home or would u rather get a tablet where u can connect a 200gb hdd on it, do some basic PP on your images and upload them/back them up in the cloud?

I'm using the asus prime for macro for 100% focusing views
I wouldn't use a tablet for editinig in lightroom on the go. Its just not comfortable without a larger and more quality screen and a mouse

But it does look nice.

You know what, I can't get Lightroom to run on my toaster either! That's because my toaster isn't designed for heavy-duty image processing. Just like my iPad isn't designed for heavy-duty image processing and not making toast. If I want toast then I'll use my toaster; if I want to lie in bed/sit on a train/lounge in the garden whilst reading email/watching TV/surfing the web/watching a movie then I'll use my iPad; if I want to process a load of images then I'll use a proper computer. Sensible people use the right tool for the right job.

If you want to spend $1000 on an under-powered laptop without a keyboard, then I'm sure you and the other people who buy one will be very happy. However, I'll bet large sums of money that the very first add-on that most of them buy will be a keyboard and a mouse.

My thoughts exactly Frank. I really like my iPad which is great for entertainment like watching movies. I also use it as a book reader. It's not too bad for emailing, surfing the internet (I'm replying now on my iPad). Where it shines is when travelling especially for watching movies and reading on those long international flights.

For serious work I have a grunty desktop, 21" calibrated screen. My iPad is a toy in comparision.
