I like the sigs with hardware in it so you can see what they are using, if they have the same camera as you and what things they have for it.

I really don't think it's an issue, but more of a personal decision. It's not required, but folks seem to appreciate it. To be honest, I listed mine because when I first joined this forum, it appeared to be the norm. After a few months of posting however, I quickly learned that people did pay attention to that stuff. For example, readers often visited my online galleries and asked about which equipment I used for certain shots that weren't posted to POTN.

A BIG SECOND to this!

Knowing what everyone else is playing with when troubleshooting realy helps.
The one thing I wish eveyone would add to the list though is what computer environment you are working in, Mac or PC and what OS.
Invaluable info.

I don't pay attention to signatures at all now, though when I first came to this forum (I lurked for quite a while before registering), I would look at a signature with the huge amounts of money invested in equipment & then at the shared picture..... you can see where I am going with this.... LOL. Well, my mother always told me that if you can't think of something nice to say, don't say anything, so I stayed quiet :D

Now, if I like an image, I don't care what it was taken with, I will say I love it, but the technical aspects of a shot are usually interesting to know regardless :)

Just returned after many years hiatus from this forum. I was a bit of a prat before, if I ever offended you, I'm sorry

I've got all the equipment I need, now I just need inspiration :D

As Tim and Uncle Doug said - the information can be very helpful when answering a question. It can also help the reader assess the relevance of the answer, although this isn't as generally sure. In some support forums I'm part of we insist the users provide full operating environment info in their posts because too many have come back 6 responses into the thread and said "OBTW, this is Word 6 for DOS". The people who don't include all this in their sig usually get 3-4 replies asking about specific details they should have offered up front. It's easier to just put it all in your sig. and be done with it.

So, how's the 200-500mm? Have you posted any shots from it here? Seems a great length but few reviews to check out.

God forbid if someone puts down what they have for equipment.. if us photogs don't put down, we repeat our selves over and over."What lens did you use?" "What flashe do you have"? etc.

I don't do it to be vain or materialistic, I do it so those who don't have gear as nice as mine feel sorry for themselves.

Seriously, I'll echo the comments others have made. If I say I used a zoom lens to take a particular picture, there's little question which particular zoom was used...

I have a simple question-

Why do most of you list the equipment you have in your signature? Not to offend, but it comes across very materialistic and vain. Photography isn't even 15% the equipment you use. It seems this forum is very materialistically oriented...

hee hee - but ! AM very materialsitic and vain!
It's like online Bling!

:D :D :D

But no seriously.... it's trhe same when Im on the Apple discussion forums troubleshooting, it is just so much easier to have your equipment, operating system etc listed otherwise you will get asked what it is again and aagain.
Persoanaly I love to know what lenses are usede and what camera especially whan I see something witha look that I would like to emulate
and also there is a little wondow shopping going on for me, sort of 'aha so it's THAT lens again is it.... might have to start saving up for that''.. then when I get itI get all excited and hopefully post some pics that show what I was trying to achieve

I like having the gear there because I can see what lenses and flashes people use and try to get photos just like them. Also I like having my camera because I have learned some of my problems are a result of the cameras functions. No one has to ask, it is right there.
