Offsite storage over network?

A recent chat at work has got me wondering more about offsite storage. I know it's important to ensure a backup offsite, however it's not always convenient to rotate drives or update regularly.

Is there a way I can back up over my Internet connection to another location? It sounds simple (I'm sure it is) but I am new to networking. A cheap solution is always ideal, I currently have a mac, as does the other destination if this helps?

Kind regards,

Matt

I use Crashplan. You backup online to their servers. You also have the ability to backup online to someone else's computer.

How did you go about initially uploading your data? For someone with hundreds of GBs (or even TBs) of files, the initial back-up could take weeks. I know they over an initial harddrive transfer as an option.

I didn't have a huge upload so I just did it online. Took about a week. For someone with a large amount of data I'd recommend paying the $$ and having them send you a seed drive for the initial backup.

IMHO unless you have a super fast upload of 10Mbps or better, and smart software that uploads multiple files at a time, the internet is too slow for online backup of wedding loads of photos. It's possible, but can take 2h to 2 weeks to upload a wedding. The reason I say upload multiple files at a time is because latency limits the bandwidth a single connection can use. For example when I ftp files to my server I use 4 ftp threads, otherwise it takes too long to complete.

CrashPlan works well for me for small amounts of data, I think I have 1GB there - documents and critical data that changes often that I don't want to lose.
