I just received my Colorspace UDMA 2 and while it's pretty nice there are a few things that I don't like about it. The biggest issue is that when the unit is powered ON and I move/rotate it, I can hear a whine coming from the unit. It only makes this sound when I move it but if I keep it still or lay it on the table, there is no noise. Is that normal? The other thing that I didn't care for was the build quality. The multiselector feels a bit cheap and I was expecting better quality. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with it and I'm more worried about the whining noise coming from it when I move it. If anyone has any experience with this, please let me know thank you.

How loud is it? There is a hard drive in it and when those are spinning they can make a tiny little "whine" when moved or rotated while spinning. The buttons on my UDMA 1 arent super fancy, but no one has complained about having any issues with them, so it wasnt a concern of mine. Not sure if they are using the same ones on the UDMA 2. With something so small and portable I actually swapped out the HDD for an SSD in mine and now there is no concern with shock or noises what so ever. Battery life is probably better too.

It's not very loud but when I heard it I was surprised as I don't remember hearing that from any of my portable HDDs or even my ancient PD70x. Yeah the buttons work but I was expecting better quality but they are still good. Thanks for your input and I hope someone else with a spinning HDD can chime in and let me know that the whine is normal.

Just out of curiosity too, when I bought my UDMA 1 a couple months ago it came with a Western Digital Blue HDD. Have you opened your UDMA 2 up and if so what brand/model did it come with?

Sorry I bought mine casing only so I could put my own drive in there. They charge too much for the ones with the HDD already installed. I had a 750 7200 rpm HDD laying around so I put that in my udma 2 but I think I remember seeing a youtube video and I think it comes with a western digital HDD but I'm not 100% sure.

Huh, well that noise is coming from that drive. So really whats being asked here is whether or not the Western Digital drives make the same sound as the one you used (assuming its not a WD drive).

One more thing I forgot to ask, does your drive get pretty hot when in use? I'm using it at home and it's already getting really hot when used to copy for more then a few minutes. I'm afraid it's getting too hot even in my cool house, I can't imagine how hot it will get if I use this outside in the summer time. Isn't the heat bad for the drive?

Heat isn't gonna do it a lot of good. My friend lost 1300 images while in Namibia. They were on a Jobo PSD. She was adding some more images, with the Jobo on the back seat, in the sunlight. The hard drive gave up and was beyond recall (even £300 from a top-tier data recovery company didn't work).

We learned two lessons. First, a backup in just one place isn't a backup. We now copy images onto each other's PSDs. Second, we do the backups at the end of the day in the cool of the hotel. Never any problems since then.

Mine doesnt heat up at all, but I have an SSD in it. I never really used it with an HDD in it. Gets thrown around too much for me to trust a mechanical drive.

Can you charge and use the UDMA MKII? I am thinking of getting one but, I've heard rumors that you can't use the unit whilst charging it and that's putting me off.

That FAQ/comparison list does not answer my question.
Yes it says the HDD is powered by USB when connected to a computer but, some times, taking my laptop on locations is not possible.
So, what I want to know is - can you offload a CF card in to the device while charging of the mains/car charger?

It takes about 15 minutes to download 1000 images. Why is it essential that it is being charged for those 15 minutes? Surely you can charge it after the images have been downloaded, after all it's gonna take a lot longer that 15 minutes for a proper charging.

What is annoying is that you can't charge via the USB port. I presume this means you need to carry a proprietary charger around. With the old Colorspace all I needed was a USB cable. I was already bringing USB-mains devices to charge all the other stuff that uses a sensible charging option (phone, iPad, GPS)

Well, we all have different needs.
Shooting RAW with Hassy H4D 60 using 8x 32GB CF cards. I plan on downloading the lot in the evenings to 3 different devices. This one being one that I am considering. Now, Battery life quoted at 120min (I would guess it will be more like 100min in real usage) and DL speed at 27MB/sec. So, that's 258GB @ 27MB sec = 160min. As you can see for me, offloading while charging is a deal breaker. I don't want to spend half a day waiting for the device to charge before I can resume backup.

The manufacturer lists a "Universal voltage (100-240V) AC adapter" as included. The name "AC adapter" (not "charger") would certainly imply strongly it can be operated from AC. Also, they list an "External battery pack" as an optional accessory, and since said pack plugs into the USB port, it certainly would seem the device can operate from any USB power supply. But, I don't own one, so I'm speculating from the manufacturer's descriptions.

(I was very close to buying the original model when it disappeared from the market. I've been a bit leary of the new model, since the new model seems to have been sneaked back onto the market, and seems to be a step backward in several ways...)
