I'm trying to decide on a mid range zoom lense. Would love to pickup the Canon 24-70mm L f/2.8, but that's just a tad bit above of my budget (but I could convince myself that it is an investment, right? :D)

Anyways, back to reality.

Here's the two I think could suffice my needs (weddings)...

The Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 or the Sigma 28-70 f/2.8.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would probably recommend the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG Macro. I have one but it had a front focus problem so Sigma is correcting this as I write this. In the mean time they sent me a 24-70mm F2.8 non-Macro and it is very sharp with great colors.

The Sigma 28 is not even close.

It's the Sigma 24-70 DG Macro which is the good version versus the Tamron 28-75 to be actual. So you have to weight if you want longer reach or more wide.

Great!

The Sigma EX DG Macro model it is! Once I get this wedding thing rolling, I'll definitely be eye ballin that Canon lens (dumb question: "is the Canon model (20-70mm f2.8 L) that much better?"

I received all the lenses in my signature today....took a few pics around the house, but nothing too spectacular. But just by the few I took, I can't wait to get my cam out in some good natural light.

Thanks for the quick response guys!

The line-up should be 24-70 Sigma and 28-75 Tamron. Very little to choose between the two. The former is a little heavier and both are capable of amazing stuff.

In fact if you browse for either of these lenses on this forum, you will find equal number of supporters and actually there are people who have used both and are indifferent between the two for most part.

What about this lens?

Kind of slow, but could this be an all-in-one?

If you are shooting weddings, I wouldn't go for this.

The Sigma or Tamron is more valuable, even if you have a wider lens with the 17mm on the wide end.

The 1785 is a very good lens bc it has the best focal range of the standard zooms, 3rd generation IS, and ring USM. However it can't compete with the Sigma 24-70 optically and it doesn't give you f2.8 speed. Each lens has perks and compromises. It all depends on what you plan to do with the lens.

Canon 17-85 is way too slow for low light situations, especially at the tele end. Have you considered a Sigma 18-50/2.8?

No, I haven't.

That lens definitely would have the wide needs covered, but the length, or lack thereof, wouldn't cut it. Or would it?

I'm thinking to take care of my wide needs, I'd get a wide prime lens. And for walk around (at the reception (weddings) ) I'd get something in the 24/28-70/75 f/2.8 range.

I'm no pro wedding shooter but I did do my first in November with the 24-70 f/2.8L. I can tell you for 90% of my shots, it was all I needed. I didn't have any super huge group shots to get though so I didn't need anything wider. I can say that I did appreciate the 24mm though...28mm would have just been too tight for that particular wedding.

As for speed...you need all the aperture you can get so I wouldn't go with anything slower than 2.8. In addition, USM is your friend. :-)

I'm also using XTs.

The Sigma and Tamron are both A1 in the bang per buck race. I had both and either is excellent. Do a search for the Canon L version. Some love it, some hate it, some are indifferent to it (like me!) Take your choice. I'd still choose the Sigma because I can buy three for the price of the Canon and still not lose on IQ or speed. I could also buy a second body with the change ... something essential if you're shooting weddings. Invest your cash in what you need now and then when things are really picking up start to replaced any gear you feel isn't justifying its place. Most of it's about you and not the gear.

Dave, where's your 24-105IS? Are they hard to come by in the UK?

It's still on order   I doubt it will ever arrive. Apparently I am near the top of the list as I ordered within a week or so of it being announced. I know I could get one somewhere else easily enough (maybe!) and if I paid top price, but I'm in n o rush. It's a travel lens to me and I'm not travelling again for a while so I can wait.

Also, to be honest, I am enjoying using manual everything and AF/USM/IS/L all just seems like a backward step and a load of cobblers ;) Would be like joining the P&S crowd again  Tho' saying that I just got a Panny FZ20 P&S and the quality out the camera is stunning. I took some samples and checked the LCD and I though what a waste of cash ... a couple of days after I checked them on the computer and Zounds!!!! I was impressed.

Those new FZs are quite impressive, especially the 20 and the newest 30. But their ISO performance is quite wanting. For basic P&S needs they are top notch though. As for the 24-105IS, I am sure you'll be pleased.
