I watched an old episode of SNL and wanted to give the handpainted pictures another shot. I love the photography they put up just before and after the commercials.

So, I was playing around. Please let me know what you think, good or bad. This isn't my usual type of work but I would like to be able to do this a little better so throw anything at me.

The thing that's really bugging me is that it came out so dark. Other than that what do you think?

his face seems a little too dark, he looks like he is sick. not to be rude or anything, but maybe it's the expression on his face...

No, I get that feeling too. But I have been looking at it for a while so I wanted another opinion. Most of the pictures I am trying to imitate all had a serious look to them. This was the first one I started on.

Thanks for the comment.

I really like it. I am saying that purely on technical opinion of the photo. I think it is a little dark and the subject looks a little sad, but a great effort! Top notch...keep it up!

Just looks like he's got smallpox. Other than that, alright.

What effect are you going for? Apart from looking like he has blotchy skin, the only noticeable effect is that it looks like he is wearing lipstick!

I tried once to create a watercolour painting effect from one of my photos, but even when I knew what the original was like, the finished "painting" wasn't that obvious. I think that you have the same problem where your PP is there, but subtle enough not to separate it sufficiently from the underlying photo.

his skin colour reminds me of the days I used to work in a pediatric intensive care unit with cardiac children -a congenital cyanotic heart condition if I've ever seen one

I wonder if this was the effect you were after?

I know the look you're talking about. I always thought those pics were pretty cool too.I think you can be a little less subtle and put a little more "paint" into it. I kinda' like the expression. I remember those photos being a little quirky and unusual, so this expression fits I think. Just proccess a bit more.

From what I remember of seeing those pics, most seemed like they were taken with a ring light and then adjusted in post for saturation, and some vignetting to add depth. Is this kind of the look you're talking about?

That is a cool shot. That's the look I kinda' remember too. Though, I still remember them being a little more painted looking. I wish I could find samples on the net, but haven't been able to so far.

What did you do to get/make this shot? It has a great feel to it.

If you scroll down a bit on this page (external link), you will see a before and after of this exact technique. Just place your mouse over the 4th image from top.
