Looks like the new iMacs have a low-reflection screen, which takes care of one of the major hits about them. Now if they can get wider gamuts. The displays are still H-IPS and with 130 "nits" - whatever those are. Last time I heard that word was in a Monty Python movie.

They also have something interesting for the hard drive - an SSD fused to a conventional spinning drive (1 or 3 TB) with apparently remarkable speeds for Aperture (and presumably other photo software).

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

I am glad I bought mine in July. The only thing this new model offers that I would want is USB 3.0. I am sure the anti reflective screen will be a big hit but I don’t need it in my office at home.I will crack mine open in a few months and install an SSD in the optical bay or take out the 2 TB HDD and put it there and get a Thunderbolt enclosure for files.

I was more interested in the 13” MBPro. I just bought the 13” Air yesterday but $1,700 bucks for the 13" MBP?

They look amazing! Def a step forward in reshaping the desktop which is what Apple has always been about. The storage drive sounds like its just a hybrid which has been around for a while now LINK (external link), but well see when it gets opened up.

Looks like the optical drive is going the way of the floppy.

Sounds more like a traditional hard drive plus the "SSD" that Apple puts in its MacBook Air, which are integrated by software, not hardware. What I like about it is that the OS (ML) automatically determines which apps and files go onto the SSD based upon usage. That should really improve performance.

Haha, can't believe I only saw this now, wow, that's amazing, 5mm?! How the hell did they put a desktop computer into that thing?

And finally, nvidia graphics, now I can use all those fancy CUDA accelerated features. Amazingly, the RAM on the 27" model is still user accessible, nice!

Hey, did I hear someone say sumthn' about an optical drive? I remember those, I just don't remember the last time I used one...

Ah yeah, the silver coaster with the adult content on which to store your favorite beverage... wait a sec--

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

I actually just used one the other day because Apple doesn't give out OS DVD's anymore and I needed to install a fresh install of lion on to an external drive. You can do it through the recovery partition of lion but Apples servers were telling me it would take 10 hours to DL lion. I let it go for three hours and then it error'd out. That is when the old snow leopard DVD (and the drive) comes in mighty handy. I also occasionally burn images to send to editors that dont have FTP.

I'm glad I built my own Windows workstation last week.

$1800 for a base 27"? Come on. If you're a professional photog and need a professional workstation, I don't know how you can consider buying this.

Really quick, consider that an IPS 2560x1440 monitor ALONE will run you $800 LINK (external link). That leaves $1000 for the rest. And you will NEVER build your own workstation as thin as that iMac! You have to remember that Apple is and has always been just as much about pushing industrial design aesthetics as it has about electronic hardware.

I'd take the Dell IPS over the Apple screen.

And $1000 would get you something better than what's in the base model iMac, not to mention the added expandability.

But I'm talking about a workstation for a professional photographer. I need to have multiple HDs in my system in addition to a real SSD and not some hybrid.
