I have a friend who purchased an original rebel and it took a few shots, but then started giving Err99. I took a look at it, and the top shutter blade was stuck out just enough to cause the rest of the blades to not function properly (I pressed the shutter button with the lens off and mirror lifted).

I can get anywhere between 2 and 10 shots before the blade sticks again. I can poke it back in with a q-tip, but same result every time. Is it simply dead, or has anyone ever heard of a fix for this?

fix is replace the shutter, although I have heard of individual shutter leaves being replaced (although lord knows why you'd just replace one leaf - the rest of them would surely be in the same condition)

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Having owned a 300D where the shutter blades broke in a similar fashion, the options are to have the shutter assembly replaced or to stop using the camera. The problem will not get better on its own.

What I expected. Thanks guys. I've had shutters fail on 35mm cameras, but not quite in the same way. Mechanically the shutter is still working fine. It's just such a tiny part of the whole machine that can so easily be poked back into place, and with a mechanical background I know that's all it takes, just didn't know if something as simple as oil or something would help. I could take the camera apart and replace the shutter, but I'd have to buy ANOTHER 300D to get a shutter. So time to chalk it up as a loss and advise him on something more worthwhile. Thanks for the input.

Maybe time to trade it using the Canon Loyalty Program. Do a search here for details but basically you get a refurb camera at very attractive prices. The 60D body only for instance is about $640 depending on state taxes. You also get a 14-day exchange and 90-day warranty. Most people feel thse cameras are "like new".

You can probably get another used 300D for less than it would cost to get the shutter fixed unless your wiling to do the work yourself. I've seen used 20Ds going for $200 so I'm guessing the original Rebel will be a bit less than that.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.
