Since I have two 430EXIIs, I bought a set of Yongnuo YN622s to achieve high speed sync with my speedlites. Fully not expecting it to work, I tried the triggers with my Calumet Genesis 400 studio lights, and sure enough I got it to sync at 1/8000 without having a dark band at the bottom of the frame. I tested it with a 5D MkIII and a 5D MkII, both with the same successful results. I then tried the same experiment on both cameras using my Yongnuo RF-602 triggers, and I got a lot of dark space in the frame.

I took this photo in total darkness (I love that these triggers have AF assist beams!) at 1/8000, F/2.8, ISO 400. For reference, the fan was on at high speed. Needless to say, I'm a happy camper. I suppose my next purchase is going to be either a Vagabond Mini or Innovotronix Explorer.

The Calumet Genesis is a good monolight for Hyper Sync applications because it has a relatively long flash duration. And If you are using it below full power its even better.

I had a 300B for a while and it worked great with ControlTL for Hyper Sync. My recollection is that the Genesis is a single voltage light so the VML should work fine with it.

I think I sold mine before I got the VMLs.

You do realize, that your fan shot would actually be sharper, less motion blur, if you were using speedlites at something below 1/4 power.
when using Hyper Sync you are turning the monolight into a constant light source and the shutter speed becomes the determining factor in stopping motion. And since 1/8000 of a second is a thin slit sliding across the sensor at closer to 1/300 of a second, there will be motion blur. While a speedlite firing at 1/4 power may be flashing at less than 1/4000 of a second.

Here is a table I found that someone measured in a lab with appropriate equipment. I wouldn't consider it gospel but it does illustrate the action stopping power a speedlite holds.

1/1 power = 1/1000 second
1/2 power = 1/2000
1/4 power = 1/4000
1/8 power = 1/9000
1/16 power = 1/15000
1/32 power = 1/21000
1/64 power = 1/30000
1/128 power = 1/35000

Curious if anyone has tried using YN-622C triggers and monolights for sports in a Gym? If you can stop a spinning fan blade, maybe you could stop a volleyball, or basket ball with two lights set at 1/4 to 1/2 power....???

Since most shots in Gyms will be shot at below sync speed, Hyper Sync/ Super Sync aren't required. You can see how strobes, usually monolights work by looking at just about any picture of an NBA game. :-)

The high shutter speed in the fan example would be detrimental to a good game shot in a gym because it would eliminate the ambiance of the arena lighting.
