We're having a Halloween party at the office and I volunteered to set up a photo booth. Well, not exactly a booth, but more like a space set aside in a large conference room. See below for more details.

Here's the gear I'm working with:

  • Canon T1i
  • 430EX II flash
  • Yongnuo 560 flash
  • 60" umbrella
  • 24" softbox
  • Remote triggers, stands, gels

I was thinking of having them next to an orange wall (yes we have an orange wall) to go with the Halloween feel, with some props and what not. Up to 5 people in each shot, maybe 3/4 to full body. Have a little room to move around but not a lot.

Wanted something that is bright and fun, maybe even a little washed out looking. I can test out the setup in advance and definitely will, just wondering if there is a setup that others think looks the best for this sort of project. Appreciate any suggestions!

The single biggest improvement in your photos will come from NOT putting them up against a wall. Then you can control exposure of the background seperately from the subjects. Just my opinion.

Agreed. Bring them away from the wall and use a strobe on the background as well. Then you can even get a nice orange that is bright in the middle behind the subjects and fades to dark on the outside edges or you can light it evenly and have a nice orange that is properly exposed without shadows

I am serious....and don't call me Shirley.
Canon 7D and a bunch of other stuff

Thanks for the tips, think you're both right on for the look we want. I'm finding that with subject 6' from reflected umbrella, wall another 6' behind subject, we're getting some good separation with the background. Tried 2 lights but the 2nd didn't really add much to the look we wanted, so will probably just stick with the 60" umbrella.

Also like that bright spot in the center of the wall, something I thought would bother me at first but now I kind of like it. Also does a nice job of doubling as a business portrait setup as well and I've had a few colleagues approach me to shoot these for them.

Will post a link to some pics of the setup and results when we're all done. Thanks again!
