My old Quiksilver skate/snowboard backpack (can't find the model) is getting kind of worn out and isn't quite padded enough IMO to serve as a camera bag. I was looking into the Quiksilver Shutter Speed bag and wanted to get your thoughts (I can find it for $140)...

I take my backpack/camera pretty much everywhere. Walk to/from work and ride the subway with it almost every day. Have had this old Quiksilver one for many years now and am pretty happy with how durable it is (overall).

What I'm looking for in an alternate backpack:
Fits 1 DSLR, 3-5 various lenses
Comfortable
Easy camera access
Able to attach a tripod/monopod
Being able to hold something about the size of an Xbox 360 in a separate storage/laptop compartment is a big plus.

This is what I have right now (laptop storage is between the large storage compartment and the back padding):

^ this pic was taken on a 12 mile hike. I had a Crystal Geyser gallon jug of water in the large storage compartment and a 32oz bottle in the large side compartment (where the 70-200 lens is in the other pic).

i the tamrac 3385 model, in black:

i was gonna write a review, but haven't had the time yet. but i think we have similar needs--i researched every brand i knew and this one gives the most non-camera space but carries a good amount of slr stuffs as well, including 1 or 2 telephoto lenses. and at first i didn't think i wanted a bag with space dedicated for a notebook, but it turns out to be very handy as i can carry magazines or books in that space, or my gf's ipad.

another plus is it's pretty weather resistant without the need for a rain cover. the zippers are either semi water-proof or have coverings over them to keep out water. i would feel very safe wearing this even in heavy rain.

i only have 2 gripes:

1. though i put it as a plus, the water overhangs over some of the zippers makes it hard to zip close sometimes.

2. i don't like how you have to carry the tripod on the bottom because if you set the bag down you will scratch the tripod. i'd prefer on the front or side like some of the others.

3. the harness is pretty well padded, but it could be wider. and a chest strap would be nice. sometimes it hurts a little carrying lots of heavy gear while standing in the same place a long time.

anyway, the bag looks very stealth but VERY high-quality in black. i was very surprised at how high quality this thing really is. my crumpler messenger has nothing on this thing.

i just got back from vegas / zion. i actually hiked "The Narrows" at Zion, and FYI if you aren't familiar, I was up to waist-high in ice cold water. the bag worked perfectly and kept out all the water. also, in between catching my breaths, i easily slid the bag off one shoulder, pulled out the camera and snapped a quick shot before putting it back into the fast-access side.

i am carrying in it:

1. 7d + 17-55
2. 10-22
3. 70-300l
4. 60 macro
5. variety of other gear (hoods, filters, etc.--i put the hoods in the top compartment though)
6. (also a cheap-o tripod attached to the bottom)

it all fits easily! and then there's space for 3 water bottles / food in the top non-camera compartment.

For me, no backpack is truly comfortable with heavy loads or extended use unless it has a good padded hip belt.

Thanks for the review. Lots of good info in there. I was looking for something with a lot more non-camera space though. Also, a side mount for a tripod/monopod is preferred.

My current one has belts for the shoulders and the hip, but they aren't padded (the hip belt has some small padded nubs where they meet the body). The shoulder straps aren't very padded either... However, I'm not sure I would go as far as wearing a vest.

well, please post if you find one. the tamrac has the most of any camera-specific backpack i have seen. this was actually my criteria.

they do have another model, the adventurer 9? something like that. but that backpack is huge, and just doesn't look right carrying around in the city.

if you need even more space, you might be better off just buying a standard backpack and putting your camera and lenses in seperate padded containers.

i really don't think you'll find a backpack that will carry telephoto lenses AND have more non-camera space. i just don't think it's physically possible. i've maxed out the camera area already, so the only way to carry more non-camera space is to make the backpack bigger. and trust me, it's pretty big already (my gf actually exclaimed how huge it was when she first saw it. i'm actually a pretty big guy so it looks fine on me though.) any bigger and it will look like a camping backpack (like the tamrac 9). you'll have to make some kind of tradeoff here.

anyway... i write too much. but just if you know of another backpack that has more space please share! i might trade mine for it.
