Hi all.
I am looking to buy a lens, but cannot decide what lens I would like to buy.
It would be used on a 60D. I would be doing portraits, but I have lenses that I will hold me over for portraiture. Mainly, this new lens would be used for horse show/equine photography and wildlife. Depending on what lens I go with, I may use it for some portraits too. I am 13 and am not yet old enough to have a real job, so I can't spend too much, or I'd be saving forever, but I realize the lenses that I want are expensive. I will be buying used or refurb. The lenses I am looking at

  • 70-200 2.8 L
  • 70-200 4 L
  • 35-350 L ( Have used this lens, it isn't as sharp as I would like, but I know someone who is interested in selling theirs used, so I will ask opinions.)
  • 100-400 L ( Have also used this lens, I loved it and got some good shots with it)
  • 28-300 L
  • 70-300L

I have not heard much about the last two lenses, so if anyone has any comments on those. Also, if you have suggestions for any other lenses, please mention them.

I've done some equine horse jumping before and I found that a 300mm is much more useful than a 200mm. It all depends on what type of perspective you're after. I was after getting in close to capture the rider's face and the horse's head and front legs. Others wanted the entire obstacle along with the entire horse in the frame - which back in the day (about 7-8 years ago) was pretty common. The great thing about equine photography (or at least with horse jumping) is that the subject always changes its distance from you within a confined space. This - at least for me - negated my need for a zoom lens. Having said that, my recommendation is probably a 300mm f4 L IS or a used 300mm f4 L non-IS. I'm not sure what Sigma and Tamron are offering within the $750-1500 price range.

The Sigma lens is the least expensive fast-focusing 70-200mm/2.8 lens. It offers most of the performance of the Canon equivalent at a lower price.

Will these be outdoor events or indoor? I shot some at the National Western stock show last year. These are indoor shots and at night so there was no ambient light helping out here:

70-200/4 IS @ 70mm ISO 2000 f4 1/250" with 430EX2 flash.

You can see here even with flash at max synch speed I still had blurry feet.

85/1.8 @ 85mm ISO 2000 F2.0 1/500" no flash.

So you can see here that a 70-200/2.8 would have been better than my f4 IS, but even the 2.8 would have struggled. What I really would have like to use was a second body with a 135/2 on it with the 85/1.8 on the first.

So if you are going to be shooting outdoors, I'm sure a 5.6 lens will be fast enough, but for indoors, no so much.

Canon 7D/350D, Σ17-50/2.8 OS, 18-55IS, 24-105/4 L IS, Σ30/1.4 EX, 50/1.8, C50/1.4, 55-250IS, 60/2.8, 70-200/4 L IS, 85/1.8, 100/2.8 IS L, 135/2 L 580EX II, 430EX II * 2, 270EX II.
