So I am trying to set up my work flow to be more color managed from photoshop for everything and have a question.

In Photoshop CS5 is there a way to have the print dialog box default to the ICC profile from my printer? Right now it goes back to "printer manages color" and I have to select "photoshop manages color". Can I get it to default to having ps manage the color on all images that I print and change it back only if I decide to?

I think the setting is saved with the document.

Try this:
Open new document, press CmdOptP, select "PS manages colors" > Done.
Close without saving.

If you now open a new document, it should stick to PS manages colors.

Existing documents would depend on how they were set before.

At least, this works for me, using PSCS6 on OSX 10.6.8

Mac OS 10.6.8 Snow Leapord is my OS, I could have sworn that I put that in there.

It seems to work with all file formats besides the one that we use. It remember for everything(psd, psb, tif, jpg, png, gif, etc) but not EPS. It just defaults on EPS files to printer manages color. So that is kind of the issue since that is what all images are formatted to. Interesting though. Indesign seems to have no problem same with illistrator with EPS files, just photoshop.

Weird. Tried it, and here the choice is saved in a Photoshop EPS file…

It saves in the file if I print and save the file. But when I open a new file that I have never printed before it defaults back to "Printer manages color". Interesting.

Did you try the steps in my first post here?
With what software were these EPS files created?

If it's not PS, chances are PS will default to it's own default (PS manages colors, after doing those steps of post #3)

CMD+OPT+P does nothing on my machine at all, CMD+P bring up the print dialog though.

And all files are created using photoshop to create Photoshop EPS files. I am not sure what is going on but it could be my copy of photoshop or mac(both of which seem to be very buggy from past experiences). Any other ideas?

Ah, must have changed the shortcut on my PSCS6.

Yep, "Print".
Create new document.
"Print".
Set to "PS manages color", click "Done".
Close document w/o save.
Create new document.
"Print"
Check setting. It should be "PS manages colors".

Works here, both in PSCS6 and PSCS4.

Might not help for existing documents, but should help for any you create from now on.

Not really…

You might be able to create an action that opens the print dialog, sets to "PS manage colors" and click "done".
Then run that action on all existing EPS files using Image Processor.

Well if I do that and create a new document it works, but that is because it is working within a PSD file and not a EPS. The problem is only with EPS files in general. If I do one file and save it, only that file will remember the settings that are saved within. It just does not default it to my last used settings on another document.

This is another reason to stop using EPS files I guess. Thanks for the help, I am going to give adobe a call here in a bit to see what they have to say.

Tried the action?

When I tried, EPS files also retained the print setting when saved…
