Ha, coincidentally that is what I did last night. 1400mm on the 1D4 with the Sigma, wide open at f6.3, no tripod, manually focused, that 4 stop OS really helps! I used a Kenko 2x and 1.4x. I need to really get this rig set up on a good tripod and raise up the aperture to about f8.

Snap...ish...

100-400L with Tamron 2x on 7D (live view focus), tripod mounted with remote shutter:

Nice shot! How much of a crop was that? I guess it would be pretty close to a 500mm at 1.4x, and would have been about 1/8th the whole frame. Try adding a 1.4x to that to see how much closer on the 7D you can get it, but you may need a tripod. At the current phase, it is a great shoot, because it is bright enough, yet gives enough edge lighting to put definition on the craters.

Here is a roughly 80% crop from the 1400mm (Sigma with stacked 2x, 1.4x), it doesn't look great at 100%. But then again neither did any of my 100-400Ls with the same combo.

We could probably resurrect one of the moon posts, we seem to get one about every year.

Stellar shots out of both lenses!

I will be buying the Bigmos, as that extra 100mm over the DustPump is really something I want. I have shot with the 100-400L though thanks to a very generous acquaintance and it really is a stellar performer. The Bigmos used is also very much in my budget.

if you're satisfied with the photos that's all that really matters.
The arguments about which lens has the better "IQ" "AF" "IS" or is sharper is kinda silly .... almost..

I didn't even take that photo and I'm pretty satisfied with it. ;) That's about the only sport I enjoy watching.
