Hi all. While I know there is no 1 setting fits all could anyone please advise am I in the right ballpark.
I am not great with flash. I was asked recently to cover a charity event and found the following settings worked reasonably well for me- 7d, manual 1/60th at f6.3 with ISO 1600. My thinking behind such a high ISO was that the burst from the flash (yongnuo yn460 in ttl mode) might be faint enough to not dazzle people etc.
I am covering a bigger charity event in a while which will be i a similar lighting situation and wondered if anyone would recommend a better way to the settings I am using.
(I was quite happy with the results from above but obviously if I can improve)
Thanks in advance

Might be worth mentioning the lens you plan on using and possibly upload an example of a photo for people to critique?

Without having this info I'll make some assumptions. I would suggest your shutter speed maybe a bit on the low side, i would look to keep this over 1/100 on my 24-70 for example. Obviously is the subject is faster moving then I would increase to suit the situation.

I would also ask myself if i need such a large depth of field? If you pull back from f6.3 to 5.6 or even 5 then could could reduce your ISO to improve IQ.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Scooby888. I will be using a Tamron 17-50 f2.8. I can't upload any photos as it was an unpaid job (I did it for experience) and the organisers asked me not to use the images on the net. It was for a charity so I had no problem with their request.
I used 1/60 to get some of the ambient light in to recognise the event and thought f6.3 might be a good balance of DOF etc, but I would happily try f5 and reduce ISO. Do you think f5 has enough DOF for shooting more than one person in a shot. Thanks again

Dept of field is all relative, I would suggest having a look at this link and get an idea what you're working with and hopefully that will answer your question.

I would like to know how you placed a YN 460 in ttl mode when it is a manual only flash.

I dont know that I would go all they way to ISO 1600, but 1/60 with that lens would be fine. Adjust the aperture for creative purposes, but if you dont need 6.3 dont be afraid to open it up for ambient balance as well. If you do that, consider gelling the flash to match the existing light sources.

Most venues seem to have light sources that look yellow. Not necessarily tungsten. I've found a 1/4 CTO on the flash is a nice balance. I want the shutter speed about 1/60 1/80 and tend to shoot wide open (F2.8) that's plenty of DoF unless you are getting bast 70mm on a full frame camera (I shoot 5DIII).

ISO so that ambient light is about one stop below proper exposure then bounce flash to highlight main subject. May be worthwhile to consider an off camera flash as well.
