My 5DII has been perfect with the 24-105/4 and the sigma 100-300/4, and the sigma 70-200/2.8 OS, and it worked fine with the 50/1.8 I bought here. However, I have not used the 50/1.8 for about two months. Today, when I put it on, it did not AF. Am I doing something wrong? Have I turned anything wrong? I tried with the other lenses and it is perfect. Any advise before I go crazy.

Operate the AF switch on the lens a few times. Sometimes with periods of disuse some oxidization forms on the metalic contacts inside them, interrupting the connection. Most of those types of switches are "self cleaning" if they are turned on and off a few times.

You also might try cleaning the electronic contacts on the back of the lens and the corresponding pins just inside the front of the camera. Just lightly dampen a clean cloth with some isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, then carefully wipe the contacts. Be careful to avoid touching the lens optics and the mirror in the camera.

Hopefully one of these will help.

Sounds like a lens issue rather than the camera, do you have another body to test with?

Thanks for the input. Other lenses work just fine. I just received my 400/5.6 and it is on the money. However, the nifty fifty does not work now. I am at work now, and I will try the on-off-on-ff several times to see what happens. If nothins, I will clean the 50/1.8 contacts to see if it works. The MF works just fine.

No, it is in the mail. The 7D should be arriving on Monday. I will try on that one then.

Well, I got a 7D and the 50/1.8II works just fine. I upgraded the firmware of the 5DII from 2.0.7. to 2.1.2. and the 50/1.8II still does not AF on the 5DII. I notice that the aperture shows as F000. I can MF, but no confirmation. THe 5DII works fine with the Sigmas and the Canon 400/5.6.

I must confess that the reason I purchased the 5DII is to be able to use my old MF SuperTakumar lenses in a FF camera. I bought some adapters that come with a chip and set couple of them up. THey worked fine for a while. I cannot set them up again because the 5DII does not recognized them anymore. I have several adapters, some more expensive than others, but all with the dandalion chip. Did I screw up my 5DII? The 50/1.8II seems fine, and AF fine with the 7D. If you have some idea (I hope is a matter of turning some functions off). I reset the 5DII and still subsist. Is it about time to send the 5DII to Canon? Your input is welcome. Pepe
